Those crawling with SM465, check in please...

Do you run a 465 and crawl/trail run?

  • Yes but if I could do it again I'd go automatic.

I had a turbo400/np203 and it was ok...
went to smc465/np205.... WILL NEVER GO BACK TO AUTO!!!!

I like the ability to control the power....

although I do hate the LONG shift point between 2nd - 3rd..... NV4500 would be nice as overdrive and closer shifting range (from what I hear)

I love my 465/205 combo. Makes up for my lack of gears in the axles when I drop into granny/4lo (with stock 3.73's & 35's).

I can idle up stuff and I rarely need to touch the brakes going downhill on steep sections. Compression braking at it's best with granny gear.

Driving around town isn't much of a chore either as most of the time if I'm not in a hurry I match the engine speed with road speed and shift without the clutch from 2-3 and 3-4, no grindage either if you do it right. Sure the shifter's got all the firmness of a piece of limp spaghetti in connected to bowl of jello, but as long as you are not trying to speed shift like a drag car driver on a hurst equipped car 4 speed you won't have a problem. It's ok for the street. Can't beat one off road. Well except a Nv4500 for big bucks...

The SM465 is a good, tough trans. I prefer a 4-speed to an auto, but can see some advantages to an auto in some situations. The factors keeping me from an auto are length, the fact that I haven't been inside one yet, and the durability/heat issues.

Don't forget about the predecesor to the SM465; the SM420. The pluses are that it's shorter and 1st gear is 7.05 vs. 6.55 in the 465.

Check this out.

I run a 420, steel bellhousing, block saver and GM hydro clutch along with 4.56 gears and 38's. Makes a nice combo for my kind of wheelin'. 1st low creeps through the rocks, 2nd low is perfect for situations where I need to go slow, but have some momentum. I use 2nd low more than any other gear.

there are few option to hook the 420 up to a tcase cause they ran them divorced for most years correct?

The 420 was never close coupled (from the factory) to a transfer case as far as I know. You need an aftermarket adapter.

I have a SM465/NP205 running 4.56s and 39.5" Boggers. It works great. I also added a hand throttle on the stick, which lets you brake/clutch/gas all at once! It cost like $30 from Rubicon Express, although you could always make your own from a bicycle shifter. This is the best trick mod ever. The advantage to buying the kit is it comes with a nice selection of parts/screw/etc to get it all hooked up. Took about an hour to install, but worth every (cheap) penny!

this should explain low

pic of me climbing a concrete based lightpole probably 36" this was in granny gear with 4.11's on 35's not even aired down.....pretty wild if you ask me.Picture

My tree climber pic. That tree is along the lane to my house. No hand throttle. No throttle at all in fact. :D

Somewhere I have pictures of my junk climbing up the driver door up on top of the roof of a Cadillac DeVille. Not that hard with no weight and 64:1... and an idle air control valve that opens fast enough not to need throttle.

Looks like you are pushing the tree over! :D

It has a natural lean to it. Kinda like an 80* ramp. :D

Has any one seen this:

STaK will be showing the new Overdrive Monster box at the Offroad Expo in Pamona in Octeber.
The overdrive is the same as the normal Monster box in all respects, except for the new gear ratio.
1:1 - 0.79:1 - 4.33:1
They should be available in November or December.

This may be a way to have a SM465 and overdrive.

Been running a 465 for years. Very durable trans. Long story, but I actually drove my old 70 truck with no oil in the 465 for 120 miles and even after that and filling it back up, it was fine. No problems running behind a 496 but I'm going to a 4L80 with a MVB now. When crawling and you're on a tricky situation, trying to do the clutch/gas/brake at the same time gets to be old. Its hard to beat a torque converter for crawling plus I want OD. Looking forward to smoother shifts too.

yep and thats why i am ditching the nv4500 idea and gonna stick with my 465 mount my 32 spline 205 to it until i can afford the direct bolt in stack

i just went through one to many of my 700r4's. sick of leaks and overheating.

i got a whole setup from camsk5, the swap was a huge bitch. i took out my 700r4/208 combo that sprung a front main seal leak for a hundred bucks less then i bought my combo for. for the swap you need to take alot of stuff apart, mainly your dash. i replaced the frame for the pedals with a manual one and mounted the master cylinder. then just came to putting the clutch and bellhousing on, i welded the shifter to strengthen up the slop (which i didnt notice much of a difference, if any). i used the ord twinstick kit, had to chop up the floor a bit for that(twinstick is bling, get it). then i had to get new driveshafts.

another thing hasnt been brought up yet, one less fluid to carry.

bottom line, if i drive a caddilac ill want an auto, if i drive my truck i want my sm465!

465, 205, 3.73's and 44's  If it weren't for that 6.55:1 I'd never move in high range. 5.13's are getting installed this month after I strip down the axles and send them to the shop. :D

Hands down 465 all the way. I wheel everything. From crawling to mud and high speed romps.
Low range and 3rd gear is just great for mud, its a long enough gear that you will rarely feel the need to shift.
Crawling in Moab, if you need a little less speed just feather the clutch until you feel the speed you need.
High speed although not the greatest for it, is still fun to bang through the gears. Hate it when I miss 3rd though :doah:

I am going the route of a doubler for a simple reason. I can keep the axle gears relativley high - 4.56's and use 42" tires giving me a highway rpm of 2736 at 75mph
The 120:1 crawl ratio will make it easy to spin the 42's whenever I want as well.

It'll be like having an overdrive tranny and atlas all in one.
Plus as mentioned above the reliability etc. just can't be beat.

I say the choice is simple :waytogo:

yo Dog, I love my 465. I run it with a 208 and 34" tires and 4:10 gears. Works great for my needs. When I go to 37"s I'll go 4:56 gears.
