Time to buy some tires...

Tire choice

That is no good. I've had good experience with the red letter versions. No flats or failures in two sets on my recovery truck. I did notice the X3's did not seem as stiff even though they have the same specs overall.

That's what I had hoped for, because the red labeled grabbers are known for their stiff/thick sidewalls. Shawn did say his red labels from the year before held up way better.

BFG ATs have been the industry benchmark since they were introduced, first tire to pass the new M/S tests, the new design looks like a few nice improvements on an already terrific tire. I've had 3 sets of the old KOs and always got 48K miles out of them.

I have Mastercraft Courser ATs (Cooper's fleet version of the Discoverers) on the Dodge, 48k on them now and I fully expect to get about 55k out of them. If you like the Cooper Discoverers, you should definitely look at the Mastercraft Courser AXT or CXT. They were $60 per tire cheaper than the BFG and $30 less than Coopers.

Leaning toward the AXT tires now that you mention it. Similar pattern to the AT3, same company, and slightly cheaper now that I missed Cooper's spring rebate.

I've got a set of 10 ply 265/75R16 General Grabber AT2's on the Silver Dodge, and they've got to be close to 60K miles by now, They were originally bought new in 2007 and put on a 94 K1500 Blazer, where they stayed to almost 30K miles, .then that truck got sold and they went on my green 7.3 F-250, where they stayed for at least another 10K, (Two trips to the UP, one to Mobile Alabama, and was my daily for three years) then when I bought the silver Dodge, they went on it, That truck had 78,000 miles on it when they went on it, and save for about 4 or 5K when I had the 35 inch Toyo's on it, they've been on it since then, and now it's got 104,000.

These tires have never been stuck, that being said they've never gone anywhere "extreme" but they've seen plenty of mud, been down hundreds of trails, powerline roads, logging roads, and farm roads, gone through plenty of sand, been through creeks, they've gone through fields and through the woods, and just yesterday we had a butte-load of rain and both roads leading away from my sister's property were washed out, so I had to go about 8 miles through the woods on flooded 4-wheeler paths to reach the tree line, then go about 2 more miles on a rutted up farm road to reach pavement. These tires are awesome.

My vote says General.

(As of half an hour ago, I couldn't find a penny, so a quarter will have to do.)

Is Craigslist a viable option for your location

Still no tires in this size. I've seen one good set, but was too slow. The local junkyard said they do not expect to see any 285/75R16s (I wanted a cheap spare).

265s are everywhere, but I already have two 285s. And I want all the height I can fit. The 245s on the Blazer wind the engine too fast on the highway.

CL is full of 17" and 18" takeoffs, I never realized I was so far behind the times. :1zhelp:

keep an eye on Tire Rack, they close out models on the cheap all the time. I've bought several sets of tires very cheap from them including a new set of tires for my acura for $220 to my door a few months ago.

see if this works

The link works, but nothing there is price-competitive with Amazon or Walmart (this week). I pick those two vendors because both offer free shipping. I can get cheap knockoff tires with a fake warranty for a bunch less than most of the offroad options listed here. I still can't get over how 285 tires are nearly double the price compared to 265s. :doah:

Just put some Maxxis Bighorns on the 3+3 last week. Bit the bullet and went with the 255/85/16s. I wanted to be around 33" but I don't care for the width of the 285s.

We have run Bighorns on the pulling truck with no traction issues, then after they came off the puller they have been on a few of my brother in laws trucks for the last few years. So I wasn't going into these blind.

I don't expect to get tons of miles outta these but for $642 for a set of four to my door I'm okay with that.

Took them through the pit at a muddin party this weekend with only 2wd and no bed. The truck would slow but once you picked up the rpms they would clean right out and keep the truck moving. Didn't have to use my new strap but monster roosters without the bed :saweet:

Which vendor did you buy them from?

I'm not looking for mud tires on this rig, but I'll give them a look.

Trail country for 128? That's about as cheap as you will get for a 285...

I used google shopping first, it's easier to compare a bunch of prices faster. Ended up 4wd.com had the best price with free shipping. Then before checkout I found a coupon for another 10 or 15% off
