TnA Release of Winch Cradle!

sorry I missed this. it is a smittybilt 10k.

No problem. Thanks much for the info and the pics!

So you're going with the wings too? Will you post pics of those when you get them mounted? I'm pretty sure this is the route I'm going to go on the front, but I'd really like to see one with the wings.

Thanks!

yup. as soon as he's ready with a set i'll be ordering them. got some modifications planned for them but gotta get them on there first.

Just curious, but do you offer a weld-it-yourself kit?

I haven't offered it as a weld-it-yourself kit, since I weld it on a jig to get the angles right. I suppose you could bolt the pieces to your truck and tack it together, and use your truck as the jig though... I could send you just the individual plates for $175 plus shipping if you'd like. (no bolting hardware either to save you on shipping weight). PM me if you want to do that.

I see 10k as the winch size, have you tried larger?

I haven't tried the new non-integrated 12k winches yet, when I first designed these years ago all the winches over 10k were MUCH larger then they are now. You could certainly try it, but if you want let me know exactly what winch you are looking at, and whether or not you have any body lift, and I'll do my best to predict if it will work or not :)

X2?

Do you have different mounting options for winches that are suppose to be mounted feet-forward?

Also, does anyone have any side profile pics showing how far it stick out from the body/grille?

No, I don't have any options for winches mounted feet-forward. They are usually much larger and would hang super-low if installed under the radiator support like this cradle does. Like I said above though, let me know what winch you have or are looking at, and I'll see what I can figure out for you, if anything.

As to how far it sticks out from the body, it doesn't stick out much past the end of the framerails. Some people have even managed to get their factory bumper back on over it with some modifications. I lost a bunch of my old pics of it, but I'll look for one from the side and post it if I can find one.

one thing I noticed with my install is a lot of winches designed to have the solenoid box mounted on top wont fit. I pulled my control box up onto the firewall and used some battery cable I had to extend the needed wiring. worked for me and is up out of the way.

Darren, what is the height of the face of the side wing. got my LED pods and need to make sure i'll be able to cut the hole where I want it.

Great Job on mounting the solenoid box! I like that a lot :) Most everyone uses a large hose clamp (quite often even supplied with the winch) to mount the solenoid box to the motor, and just mount it front-facing. It's all tight in there, but that was the point - get as much clearance as possible and still get a winch in there!

As far as the side wing's front face (remember it's angled down though), here is a drawing with the dimensions for everyone...

Most manufacturers list the dimensions of their winches. You could just compare the sizes of the 12k and the 10k winches and figure out if they would fit or not.

My winch is a Ramsey Patriot Profile 9500. I thought it had to be mounted feet-forward but I just looked at the owner's manual and it doesn't say anything about it. My guess is that it would be fine.

I ask about how far is stick out because I would like to build a tube bumper off of the cradle but I wouldn't want it sticking out farther than my current tube bumper. An adapter plate to weld the tubes to would be cool. I'd make a pic showing what I mean if someone posted up a side-shot.

So... ...I had a winch cradle sitting on the bench today, and the new Shop K5 was sitting in the bay next to the fabrication area... And then there were questions about what would fit and what wouldn't...

1. I removed the factory bumper to reveal some pretty nice un-touched frame horns:

2. I bolted the driver's side mounting bracket up with no problems, then the passenger side hit the frame at the very lower leg of the "c" and caused the bolt holes to not line up properly:

3. After tapping the frame back into square with a BFH, the bracket fit properly, and all the holes lined up quite nicely!

4. Once the side brackets were on, the main cradle got bolted up. I even went so far as to re-bolt the factory anti-sway bar into place, even though it will be coming off soon. I just wanted to make sure everything fit nicely and all the holes were in the proper positions.

5. Measurement time!! Here is the distance between the framerails where the winch will mount. 23.5" on this '86 K5, which leaves 11.75" from centerline in either direction, without trimming that lower frame leg at all.

6. Height from the winch mounting base to the bottom of the radiator support with NO body lift. 8.75"

7. Stick-out past the very end of the framerail; only 1.25"

M12 warn w/ 1" body lift.

As far as the Warn M12 goes, I'm pretty shocked at Warn's website but they don't have their technical drawings available any more (at least not that I could find). It shows the mounting pattern to be the same as the winch cradle, and then it only lists overall dimensions. Height-wise you should be fine, and from the picture it looks like the solenoid box is clamped around the motor, so positioning it forward to fit shouldn't be a problem either. Width is listed at 24.375" which is a little wider than the framerails on these trucks. So the only thing I can be sure of is that you WILL have to trim the lower leg of your frame to get it up in there. Just how much, I'm not sure. Possibly quite a bit. If you already have the winch, can you get me a dimension from the center of the rope drum to the outside edge of the motor? That would tell me for sure how it will fit.

There should be pics up above that you can see the side view in. The Ramsey Patriot Profile 9500 should fit just fine, with a slight bit of trimming to your lower framerail leg for motor clearance (their drawing shows 12.77" from centerline to outside of motor. The cradle is slotted, so you can offset the winch ever so slightly, plus the motor end is usually curved a little. Those two things will add up, but you will probably still have to trim just a bit.)

Here are a few old pics of the side "wings" for the winch cradle. These are painted, but they come bare steel like the cradle. Remember, the front fender "fangs" MUST be trimmed to work with these!!! Pricing will start at $150 for the pair plus shipping.

Construction is a combination of 3/16" and 1/4" plate. I have a couple sets made up at the moment but they are all spoken for. I will be making more just as soon as I can.

Do you make one that fits the older style frame rail, or is it just for the 1981+?

Hey Martin,
I don't make any specific to the older frames. However, a buddy of mine just bolted one up to the older frame style with minimal mods. We have determined in the past that they don't fit up exactly, and that the very end of the frame "horns" will have to be trimmed off. But he found at least one bolt hole that actually lined up on the frame end once it was trimmed, and then had to drill a couple others. Also, the angle at the sway-bar mounts is slightly different, but just tightening the bolts down pulled everything together nicely. That's about all the information I have on it at the moment.

Can you get a pic? I would be interested but I don't want to start more of a project than building a new one.

Here's a better one. Still need to get my winch in though.

Just an FYI to everyone... My Plasma system is down for the moment, and I currently have only 1 winch cradle left in stock - and I do not have any shackle tabs left to weld onto it. I'll sell it at a reduced price if someone needs it, but I am going to check on financing a new system Monday. I'll keep you posted :)

Finally completed...
I purchased the "Weld It Yourself" kit from Darren... GREAT kit, pieces were labeled which goes where, made the weld up portion simple. Everything fit like it was supposed to!
