Is it a pain in the ass to get to the drum engagement lever? Looking for opinions and pics if possible.

Erics is above the frame rails.

He doesn't have a core support so he can push it back farther.

Kicking myself should have gone the tube front route

So your wanting to spin it 90 from that pic, where the lever would be facing the rad? Guessing thats what you mean by feet forward. Could you drill a hole in the lever, put a bolt in, and have a rod shooting out the side to make a push pull linkage type deal?

Turn it 90 and put between the frame rails so it is not sticking out so far. But Id have to leave an access hole to get to the drum engagement.

Thats what i meant by the linkage. Make a rod shooting out that you could pull and angle it into the 2 positions and something to lock it like a spring pin or something quick and easy.

Check out the old VTBlazer build thread on here somewhere....

IIRC he said that you could remove the side bolts on the winch and rotate that lever relative to the housing to get it into a more favorable position. I think Kurt ended up with his pointing straight down which was easy to reach but still protected enough to avoid trail damage.

I just did a tune up on my winch as I was doing the install.
I spent a little time looking at the way it sits in the frame and behind the Abomb (I realize you don't have an Abomb, but it still applies.)
You can rotate these Warn winches any way you want by taking out all the screws that hold the planetary, cover in place. It's actually more than a cover, it secures the ring gear/Brake assembly in place, and allows a place for the engagement lever to do it's thing.

Anyway, remove those screws, use a rubber mallet to "tap" the cover assembly off. Be prepared to catch the little sun gear it just sits in the center of the outer set of planetary gears, and will fall out given the opportunity. They are $25.00 bucks and not very plentiful, don't ask!
I peeled the gasket off and buffed the area clean as the gasket had turned to mush, I re-sealed it with my favorite Aircraft structural sealant.
Then rotate the cover to where ever you want it to sit and wrestle with aligning the planetary gears with the outer ring gears in the cover. Then tighten the screws an you set.

You can see the screws on the extreme left side of the picture...

In fact, if you wanted too, you could re-assemble the winch totally backwards and have the motor on the opposite side if you wanted to.

The main mounting blocks on the large frame Warns of this vintage are interchangeable.

check out jeffs build.

pretty sure he took his xrc10 apart, clocked it and filled it with fresh grease when he put on his a-bomb

I cannot post pictures on this site, I mounted mine between the frame rails (Ramsey Patriot 9500). It is mounted feet down. I had to cut a notch in the top of the bumper for the selector and cut a hole in the front of the bumper for the fairhead mount. You can see pictures of the install on another K5 forum.

Well, this might not help. Its not a Warn, or even a Smittybuilt. But it is mounted between the rails, and I have no problem getting to the shift lever.

Don't know if it will give you any ideas or not.

Figured I would just link to the thread rather than posting the pics again and taking up more server space.

As you can see, I did have to extend the frame out some to have room to weld the cross pieces.

I've run into very few winches that the clutch housing is not clockable in one fashion or another.

I have clocked the smaller smittybilt.

You should be able to clock it to where you can get to it Jess.

I have built a couple winch mounts in between the rails for guys and it was never a big deal. I always had the clock the engagement lever.

Clocked it on my setup too. I think the only truck I have ever not clocked it on is a Jeep

Didnt Eric have a nice way of doing it on horton?

Just cut metal out of the way and put said metal in a place that was not in the way

My goal was to prevent me from killing my winch on the rocks though. So as far back and as high as possible.

In between the rails is a much better place for it though

Thats what im trying to accomplish, and not ruin my approach angle since I only have 38.5's (for now). Even though they measure 39" at 20Psi. I went through Jeff's build thread and saw how he did it. Looks simple enough.
