park neutral switch wires get tied together in the painless harness if they are not ties to an actual switch. I guess this was what made me ownder why VSS was needed in this scenario...but I got it now.

That little outing cost me a new driveshft, new tranny/transfer case adapter, new fuel tank...and a water temp gauge...Ha
