Side work can be very rewarding with the right customer. Make steady progress each day, and you'll easily develop and hit your milestones.
Managing expectations is critical. I do weekly updates - always by email with photos - as if they were forum posts. Keeps the customer informed and engaged; that's also when I do summary billing, which is out of scope for you except for the ever constant list of required parts not on hand.
