I've never worked on these axles. I've just bought one out of a '79 T/A to put under my wifes '67 Camaro.
Has anyone got a manual that they could scan the relevent pages and post up or email me? I'd like an exploded diagram, specs (clutch plate thickness, torques etc) and a 'how to' for rebuilding it (I've never touched a posi before!).
Come on....there must be some ex- Smokey and the Bandit merchants out there!:D

Thanks for that. I've done axles before but not dealt with a factory posi. I've no idea on plate thickness etc or even how to get them apart!

I can't find anything with detailed specs or pics at this time. My old Mitchell book covers the rebuild of the rear end and limited slip unit. You might try the local library. I know ours carries the old Mitchell, Chiltons, and Motor manuals. Then you can just photocopy the section you need.

im one of the ex and will be getting another 70s camaro or trans am.. i cant be much of more help.. sorry

Why not get one of the synchroed lockright type lockers and an open diff . Cost a bit more than rebuilding what you have , but the thing would not slip at all , and the synchros would make street driving a breeze ..... unless its raining when you fling it around a corner :thumb:

It has a converted M20 under there at present and the T/A axle is about an inch narrower. (measured roughly) Not even sure I'll need to move the perches. I'll see when I get the old one off and measure it.

I've already bought this one, it has a posi and long gearing which will suit her driving better. She likes to light them up off the line but it'll be much nicer cruising with these gears compared to what is in it at the moment.

I've owned a 2nd gen camaro and i know for a fact that a 2nd gen axle is too wide for a 1st gen camaro. Now maybe someone has modified the body on your camaro to accept a wider width axle but from the pics i seen it doesn't look modified.

No it's not modified. The wheels are out further than stock for sure with kind of '80s street racer look (well, that's the kind of look they were into here in the '80s, jacked up and wide arsed).
I'll find out when I get the other axle off, but as I said, measuring 'roughly' the T/A is maybe the same or an inch narrower than the jeep axle on there now. (at least we think it's a Jeep M20 of sorts....the debate goes on!)

If that axle doesn't work out. Try looking for an early 70's nova with an 8.5 10 bolt. They are a direct bolt in for a first gen Camaro. Same width and spring pads.

Thanks but there's not too many of them over here! I was offered an axle out of a '67 Camaro but the gearing was wrong and it was open so the T/A seemed like a better deal. Time will tell!

The axle is too wide well the perches are but if you can weld new ones:D If your camaro has the bigger 10 bolt and the TA is the bigger 10bolt just swap the carriers they had like two 8.25 and 8.5 or something.

I put a 9 inch from a early style bronco 68-74 or so into my Nova and it is inch and a half shorter then the factory one which also happens to be the same one that is in your camaro.

Which posi is it they had like three different versions of it S spring and 4 springs and another one too.

It's got a kind of S shaped piece of metal in the middle of it???

Yup thats is the S spring version of it, don't quote me on this but i think that is all the posi is just the spring no clutches or anything its been a long time since i have looked at one, but my 74 Nova had one of those.

Are they ok? the S spring type? Doesn't seem like a good method to me.

And why aren't you asleep?:D

Yes, mine worked fine operation seemed pretty simple
