a friend told me that the transmission fluid on his 700R4 gear box got into the transfer box through the seals.. is this possible?

just a question...

yeah, when seals go out but I wouldn't think in very noticeable amounts. The leaking fluid then has to be sucked in through the transfer case seal so it would only happen if that space was full.

If it is a 700r4 transmission and NP208 transfer case, they both use Automatic transmission fluid.
Unless one were losing fluid while the other gained fluid, there would be no other way to tell the difference.
Are you sure your friend knows the NP 208 is supposed to have ATF?

I don't think he does, he was saying it should use W90 fuild which is a heavy engine oil..

First we need to positively identify the transfer case.
An NP 208 or 241 will have a round id tag on the back of the case.
Both those cases take ATF.

An NP203 takes 30 weight motor oil.
An NP205 takes gear oil.

Best for him to identify which case he has first.
