yeah, when seals go out but I wouldn't think in very noticeable amounts. The leaking fluid then has to be sucked in through the transfer case seal so it would only happen if that space was full.
If it is a 700r4 transmission and NP208 transfer case, they both use Automatic transmission fluid.
Unless one were losing fluid while the other gained fluid, there would be no other way to tell the difference.
Are you sure your friend knows the NP 208 is supposed to have ATF?
