Transporting a non-op Blazer

That is not correct. His vehicle, if kept up to current, is currently registered as non operational.

For example, if you get pulled over for driving a vehicle that is currently non op'd, you'd get a ticket for improper registration, not a lack of registration. Also, if it was non op'd less than 6 months ago, you'd get a ticket. If the vehicle was non op'd over 6 months ago, an officer would likely impound the vehicle.

Maybe I worded it wrong however the facts are, no tags no lift through AAA. I wasn't trying to spark a registration debate, that's a whole other thread for CA :D

I'd say the best thing to do is see if someone on here will haul it for you or find a buddy with a truck who would tow it up there if you rented a trailer or find a buddy who has truck and trailer. That would for sure be cheaper than a tow company hauling it for you.

I'd say the best thing to do is see if someone on here will haul it for you ...

No buddies with trucks or trailers, that would've been my first option.
I sent a PM to rjfguitar but I think something :screwy: may have gone on and it didn't get delivered. But if he doesn't feel like doing it then that's fine, I understand. I have a hard time asking for help or putting people out of their way. I don't expect anyone to do it, but if they do they'd get paid what would have otherwise gone to a hauling service - keeping the $$ in the CK5 family. :thumb:

What about Corey 78K5. Didn't he drive a tow truck. He actually use to live just a few miles from the place where I'm headed. If I remember correctly he moved out of CA and back again but he hasn't been on here in ages.

If you know someone with trailer experience, that would help.
I rented a Uhaul trailer ~$52 a day and an Enterprise Dodge 2500 diesel for my Moab trip.

I don't remember what the diesel cost me per day but was ~ $630 for the week. As long as you bring everything back, it will cost less. If you do a one way, that can cost a lot more.

I think this would be best if you can find a driver. The Dodge got ~12mpg avg towing

And remember guys, most tow truck drivers work for a company. I don't think "helping a friend" falls under correct use of the truck. :(

Enterprise 3/4 ton diesel is $80 a day according to their site and my location. Includes 300 miles free but if you do the deal in person, they will likely waive the mileage restriction like they did for me. Mileage for the week was only 900, I ended up putting ~1800-2000 miles on during the week :D

Oh sorry my PM box is full. First I'd like to know, as asked, where it's at and where it's going. My rig is 50ft long, so those details are critical. But to be honest, I'm a super busy guy and if I can squeeze this in, I'm not exactly cheap. Thats why I need to know the first question. If your cabin happens to be over here in my neck of the woods of the 108/hw4/Yosemite corridor, then this could possibly work.

I think I'm a little bit out of your way. It's currently in San Bruno, about 10 miles south of SF. It's going to Humboldt county just outside of Garberville. I don't know if a 50' trailer would make it along the 18 miles of county road and 2 miles of dirt road, that's why I was thinking about a flatbed. I guess I could always get a flatbed to do the last 20 miles.

I just got home from the tow company that's two blocks from me because they advertised on their site that they do long distance hauling. I'm still in a state of price shock. Told them it was 230 miles freeway, 18 county road, 2 miles dirt road and specs for my truck. For a 250 miles flatbed haul, fuel/bridge toll included with one day notice and I can put some spare fenders in the back -$685 :eek1:. Little did they know I was ready for a quote 5 times that.

Have you tried www.uship.com? You can get competitive bids. Just be specific about the roads like you were with the tow company.
I found them last week and I think the cheapest I got was 650 for a carrier. Even then they'd drop it off in Garberville which is 20 miles away and I'd still need to have a flatbed haul it. I was ready to drop a couple G's to haul it so I'm taking this quote and running with it. :thumb:

My trailer is 30', I'm 50' total.

You are going a totally different direction than I thought. When you said cabin I just assumed it was coming over hear and up into the Sierras. If you found a tow outfit that will do it for less than $700, go for that. I would be way over that unfortunately.

Good luck!:thumb:

Yeah, when I said northern CA I meant the real one. I consider SF central CA but most people forget that there's another 300 miles from SF to Oregon.
I just don't see how they can do it that cheap. I'm guessing they get 10 mpg and fuel would be $5 per gallon. So a 500 mile round trip for them would be $250. Then if the driver gets $200 for his time that only leaves $200 profit. Maybe my figures are off though. I do know that the driver will be getting a fat tip though since he'll probably be on the road for 15 hrs. :wink1:

A 30' trailer would still be difficult in the last few miles. Just out of curiosity, what would you charge for a trip like that if you don't mind disclosing that info?

So does anyone know what ever happened to Corey 78K5 or if he still lives in Humboldt these days? Seems like once he met bluechic he fell off the face of the earth.

Couple things (mostly from my experiences):

I got my K5 (non-running) from family out in CO and went through U-ship. Its a pain in the ass to find a decent carrier that will pick up a non-runner thats not in their area. These brokers will promise you the world and dirt cheap rates until they lock you in and now they cant find anyone to do the job for what they quoted you. You have to wait a few weeks until their quote expires to find another carrier. Ended up finding a small carrier (dodge 3500 w/40' flat bed) on u-ship thats pretty local to me that would drive out there, winch it on the trailer and bring it here. Basically a round trip job that took about 5 days. on the AAA..I have AAA and have used it alot over the years. Yes... they will not tow a vehicle that does not have current tags/registration. I found this out tring to go that route when a bought a non-running VW a few yrs back. I was told to do this by two different drivers from different companies.. "driver says heres my personal cell#, call me and tell me your calling in for a AAA tow when you need a non registered towed again, tell the AAA operator you want my co. to do the tow and give them info from your other current ride that "broke down"(wifes honda etc). I will pick up/tow your rig and put down i towed the honda. My tow shop gets paid (by AAA), as do the driver and you (K5 owner) slip me a few $$ for the trouble". Yea.. prob not legal or the right thing to do but it does work.
