So, if i had to run this on the freeway at 55-60mph, how long do you think it will last?

Noticed the tread coming apart, ran it up to 55mph, immediately lost 1/2 the tread, pulled over, took this picture when i took it off.

The rest of the story will follow after some more guesses....

If it started to fall apart like that when you hit 55 then I would guess 5-10 miles.

I had a bearing wear out on my motorcycle trailer. The tire instanly locked up. No way I was leaving the bikes on the side of the highway. I just dragged the thing with smoke pooring out the back. I was actually shocked at how long the tire lasted.

I'll take the low guess and say 0 miles, as it should NOT be reinstalled on a vehicle and driven on just for pleasure purposes.

Well, here's the story.

Helping out a friend who's wife is terminally ill, and was picking his boat up from Don Pedro.

Noticed the tire starting to come apart as i got on the freeway, lost 1/2 tread immediately, pull off the highway, take wheel off. Take photo above.

Look around the trailer, see spare, do a happy dance. Install said spare, which has good tread, and go to put air in. Valve stem falls off. :(

Its now 5pm on a Sunday, and i'm stuck over 60 miles from home, with nowhere safe to leave the boat.

Evaluate my options. AAA won't help a trailer with a Plus policy.
No tire stores open. No other places to get a spare.

Figure I'll need to be towed, but might as well see how long this tire holds out and save some distance on the tow. Reinstall messed up tire.

Now, keep in mind, this is a 3500lb tandem axle boat trailer, behind a 3/4 ton suburban. Tires are load rated as if it was a single axle trailer, so if lose one tire at speed, not the end of the world. Always have the option of chaining up one axle, and continuing slowly on 3.

Got on the road, up to 55mph, and although a bit lumpy....damn thing made it all the way home, over 60 miles! Not one more piece of rubber came off.

Off to the tire shop tonight for 5 fresh trailer tires....

damn. i guess thats a good image of why you should get the correcltly rated tires.

They were C rated Trailer tires, so yes, they were rated correctly.

But, they were probably original on the trailer, and the boat is a 92....so.....:doah:

thats what i mean. i've seen a lot of trailers where they just throw on any old thing, which i wouldnt have expected to do as good as that did in that shape.

but yeah 20 years might be stretching it... lol

When I was about 12, my father bought a brand new set of tires for his car.
I think they were Firestones.
He bought them through the company, and the company mechanic took the car down and had them balanced and put on.

He got the car about 5, drove it home and we got up the next morning before daylight going fishing.
We had a friend in the passenger seat. I, of course rode in the back seat.
He passed a car, and when he brought it back, I thought I noticed a wobble or sway.
Few miles farther along, he started noticing a vibration in the front end.

He mentioned that these were brand new tires, and were supposed to be balanced. I spoke up and mentioned the sway I had felt.
He didn't answer, just pulled the wheel left and right to cause a gentle swerve to see if he could feel it.

Suddenly it sounded like a machine gun had gone off right under the passenger side floorboard.
The passenger had done some combat tours, and was suddenly in the back seat with me.

My father got the car stopped and we all piled out to see what had happened. A strip of the tread about half the width of the tire had come loose from the carcass on the right front.
Then one end had come loose, and the strip started beating the underside of the wheel well at the tire rotational speed.
My father cut the other end loose, and we continued on riding on the remainder.
A few miles farther on, some more came loose but did not stay attached.

We got to the boat landing, fished all day and drove home on that tire. All the tread had come off except for one strip all the way around the tire about 1 to 1.5 inches wide on the inside.
As I remember, I don't think the bare carcass touched the pavement.
Plus, it rode very smoothly.

Monday morning he drove it to work, called the mechanic and complained that the new tires bumped a lot and they must not have done a good job of balancing them.....

The mechanic promised that he would take it right back and make sure they balanced them right this time.
He bout had a heart attack when he walked up to the car....

here's my tread-fail story..

back when I was working collision, we had some young douche guido "daddy bought me a mustang" guy with a white fox body...

he was being an idiot and sideswiped a guardrail or something... had to replace the qrter panel, doorskin and fender... so i get it done, painted... he comes to pick it up, does a big smokey burnout leaving the parking lot, turns around and comes back...

big hunk a tread had come loose and proceeded to beat the he!! out of the qrter I just painted... idiot....

I remember having a B.F. Goodrich radial on my 1966 Buick Electra 225 shedding the entire tread off its left front tire while I was driving at 65 mph on a local highway,I was coming back from a Honda motorcycle shop I had given a friend a ride too,to pick up parts for his dirt bike....................................................................................................I did not have much warning,I felt a slight shake in the steering wheel for about a mile, them BOOOM,the entire tread peeled off in one swoop, and I saw the front fender "jump" about 6" when it got flung off--I swerved and fought to keep it in the first lane, the sudden shock of it failing startled the crap out of me!...I pulled into the breakdown lane, saw the tire was now treadless, but still was full of air!..I checked the trunk,my spare had about 5 pounds of air in it,and traffic was so heavy I decided changing it even if the spare was good and full, was too risky--so I got back in,and proceeded to drive home,I kept the speed about 45 mph tops..................................................................................................I soon had cars pulling alongside of my blaring their horns, and a few people leaned out of their passenger side windows ,yelling at me and pointing at the front tire, which was now throwing sparks like a grinding wheel--I waved back to them and smiled, and they all backed WAY off,and stayed far behind me,or they flew by me going 90 mph hoping to get away before the tire blew apart.................................................................................................meanwhile,I prayed no state cops came up behind me!................................When I got home, the tire was still fully inflated--but it looked more like a 15" wire brush, that a tire!.....had to wear leather welding gloves to take it off,it was worse than picking up a porqupine...I filled my spare up and threw it on,and then spent the afternoon looking for anyone willing to take that tire off the rim,and sell me a used one...took 5 tries before I found a gas station that reluctantly said they would do it....charged me 25 bucks to remove it,and put on a bald tire from their junk pile!...........................................I recently put 4 used 265/75/16 Goodyear Wranglers on my '82 K2500,when I removed the 4 old tires that were very dry rotted and old,but still had nice deep tread,I was rather horrified to discover two of them had BIG chunks missing out of the inner sidewalls, one lost two of the white letters, and the cords were showing, and I was surprised they hadn't popped like a ballon....I also noticed one front tire,a Michelin, had a crack along the shoulder where the tread meets the sidewalls, and deep cracking ON the tread areas that you could see rusty steel belts poking out of!......glad I have not used the truck on the highway much the past year!..:doah:

Always, ALWAYS run on new tires, I always do, forever will. It bothers the crap out of me when I see a person just throw some mix'n'match old used tires on a car. Seen it too often. I lost a good friend due to tires that were only 5 years old. That and a combination of speed and the tires just came apart. Well the tread did. Police report stated that the tires were fully inflated, but the fact that they were old meant the internals were too wore out and failure prone. All you guys are damn lucky imo.

I WISH I could buy 4 new tires for all my vehicles!--even when I had good full time jobs,I rarely bought brand new tires...today it would cost more to buy 4 new tires ,than what I paid for several of my TRUCKS......................................................................................I only bought one set of 4 Cooper Discoverer 8.75x16.5's many years back ,for my 72 K5 ,brand new...other than those 4 I may have bought maybe 2 or 3 others brand new--back when a decent tire was only 50 bucks or so...all the rest of the tires I had were used ,and I haven't had all that many problems with them--dry rot from lack of use kills all my tires long before the tread ever gets anywhere near bald...................................................................................................I have bought many like new tires off junkyards,a full set of 4 B.F. Goodrich All Terrains once for 100 bucks,31x10.50-15's that still had nubs on them, someone totaled a Bronco just days after buying them...at todays prices over 100 bucks each,I doubt I'll ever be buying any new tires--not that I dont WANT too, just that I CANT...besides,I consider it a waste buying new, then letting them sit until they crack ...not when I can get very nice barely used tires for 30 bucks each locally................................................................................................I just inspect them good for any cracks, rot or plugs before I pay for them...I dont go much over 65 on the highway either...I bet I've driven a million miles on "maypops" and I'm still here!...not saying its the best way to go,but its gotten me by....................................................................................................When I was a broke teenager,I used to scour tire dumps and pick out the best looking ones, some were ones that were recalled like the Firestones back in the late 70's--tire shops and dumps were loaded with recalled ones, and most were "ice picked" after they were given credit for them, then dumped...I'd buy a tire plug kit and put radial tubes in them,I ran them on my '56 Chevy pickup for 3 years with zero issues...granted I wasn't carrying 4 tons or towing at 70 mph on them, but I did haul my share of overloads to scrapyards and didn't have any failures...
