Truck Avenger vs TBI

Thanks for the welcome, I just filled out my profile so you should be able to see my e-mail. Among other things I do F I coversions, engine building, carb building etc. as a sideline. Any other wheelers in Tucson on ck5 say hello, Im new in town.

My guess is the guys who have had trouble with Q-Jets have not had them tuned right (be it idle mixture or whatever). I think mine would still run it I put my truck on its side, it has run absolutely flawlessly at every angle I have ever put it on (some pretty serious stuff, trust me). My vote still goes to Q-Jet.

I say if the TBI is an option go for it. I have been running a Q-jet since I have owned my truck and considered the truck avenger but if EFI was an option for me I never would have thought twice. If your worried about the work just think of it this way, do it once and its done. I take my truck to the blazer bash every year and my mileage is horrific just from all the altitude changes. With fuel injection it wouldn't be a problem. Not to mention how often I stall out while I'm trying to climb the ledges. I'm sure a lot of people assumed it was the sm465 making me stall out but I assure you it was the lack of FI most of the time.

If your worried about making changes to the engine don't be. aftermarket chips aren't that expensive.

I have a 500 caddy that I am building and there is no aftermarket EFI available for them. I will be paying someone to build me a custom system for it. It'll cost me an arm and a leg but will pay for itself on the trail in no time.

In my mind there is no decision to be made here. :wink1:

Thanks guys. I think you've got me talked into the TBI. Although I would like to hear why 79chevyk10 said he was going to convert from a TA to TBI. Thanks for all the info guys, and theperfectgarage, I may take you up on your offer if I need some help went the time comes.

There is an adapter plate that you can put on the bolt a TBI to a regular carb intake manifold. It was around $20 or $30 from summit. TransDapt is who makes it. This would save you from having to change heads and intake.

I find it interesting that you now have a truck avenger and are going to switch to TBI. Why? Is it because of the elevation changes or did it still cut out on you on hills? Elevevation isn't much of a problem for me, I have to drive for 5 + hours to go from 1000' to 3000'. No mountains in Nebraska.

Strictly for elevation and fuel milage. Plus, EFI will never stall out on a hill. About the Truck Avenger, it has never given me any problem on off camber manuvers. Just want EFI to go to the next step and never have to worry about it. Also here in California I still have to smog it, so I'm buying an 94' and will swap out everything and smog my 79 as a 94 with does not come with EFE valve on the exhaust and can leagally run headers.

NOPE, carb ran sweet and passed smog. Idle mixture screws have nothing to do with off camber flooding. I just have had bad luck with them. Lucky for you your works fine. Q-jet never stalled out on my side, just extreme nose up manuvers. Just my experience.

On a q-jet, dropping the float level a bit below stock spec fixes the nose up stutter for the most part, plus there are a few other things that can be done. Mine ran fine in my full body up to the point I was dangerously close to endos, but my truggy could easily exceed it... Can't beat TBI in general, unless you're building for max power.

Never did drop the float level below stock spec, was thinking that it would cause it to run to lean which can cause a whole other set of problems. Its good to know that just a little less float level will help without lean out. Food for thought now, just hammered out the deal on a 94' suburban 2wd in clean condition, was brought into my shop with a blow out 10 bolt rear and cust. doesn't want to fix it. Gonna buy it for cheap.

It's been several years ago, but one of my friends switched from carb to TBI on the 350 in his Jeep. He bought a non-running trashed van for super cheap and stole the TBI components off of it, and then sold the rest of the van parts for the same amount he paid for it to begin with.

He wound up only having a couple hundred $$ in it total and it ran great.
