Truggy build Season 4 (Project Freak)

Everything I own is for sale, but last year about this time, I got laid off. There are probably less than 20 full time machinists in Alaska, so rather than try to find a job as a machinist, I was going to sell the truck, buy some equipment, and go into business for myself full time. Fortunately, just before my savings ran out, I found a job as a Valve Tech, and was able to keep the buggy.

Its still for sale, but not for 10k like before :p
 
I'm in the process of finishing up the fabrication on the front axle, so I made some weld washers to increase the durability of the upper link mounts and the lower coilover brackets. Both are 1/4" plate Tig'd to the 3/16" thick brackets.

I'll post pics of the final gussets and what not tomorrow.

So I planned to spend all day finishing up the axle fab, but the plant called and I had to go to work. Fortunately I was able to get enough done that I can move on to other projects that need to be done before the truck hits the trail.

I was going to make plate style gussets for the coilover and link brackets but I didnt have enough 1/8" plate on the lower control arm brackets, so I used tubing for the rest. I'll let the pics do the talking.

WOW! that is a nice dash! similar to what I want to do. I plan on using something like the 1/4 turn dzus fasteners atleast on the gage panal for quick easy access. dig the billet glove box door, nice touch. killer leg room.


thanks jek for requesting the pics again. I dont hit up Pirate so I never saw the pics.
 
Dzus would be nice, but their expensive. I've spent quite a bit of money on this truck, but I cant imagine what it would have been if I bought all the little bling parts I wanted! LOL. I really wanted Dzus for the hood, but buying 20 of those suckers would have doubled the cost of the entire hood.
 
Ya, I got an update of sorts....


I about killed myself with the buggy the other day. I jacked the rear of the truck up to put a jack stand under my pass side rear tire cause it goes flat over a weeks time. Im working nightshift for turnaround at the plant so I havent had time to even go into the shop, muchless work on the buggy. But I stopped in there the other night to make sure the tire wasnt being ruined.

When I jacked up the rear axle, (floor jacks swing in an arc) the weight shifted, and the truck moved forward enough to tip the jack stands over. The truck came crashing down, chassis hitting the floor with a very loud thud. Laying across the top of the cage was a 2x3x.250 by 8' section of rectangular tubing. When the truck hit the ground it paused on my little wooden stool, pitching the tubing off the top of the truck, just inches from my face. As I reeled back (busting my @ss on the concrete floor) my front 8274 slid off the back of the bed, landing just inches from my left leg.

Moral of the story? Dont work tired, Dont work alone, and dont do sh!t with heavy stuff without looking at the whole picture.

The good news? The strength of my bump stop mounts, front bumper and pad eyes are plenty strong. :whistle:

Wow man! Ever so often we all have these "wake up calls", but eventually, it may be a "check out call" if we're not careful... Glad you (and your truck) are ok!
 
BTW Brook, ever seen a film called "Final Destination"? You might want to be VERY careful... ;)

I once removed my neighbors rear driveshaft to change out his u joint and forgot to check and see if he had chocked the wheels and set the park brake. He had just run to the parts store for something when I popped the shaft out and the rig started rolling back down his driveway I was able to kick my foot up and stop it by holding my foot on the crossmember. Then it donned on me I couldn't hold it forever, so with my other foot I dragged the socket set case over then pushed it with my hands just behind the front drivers tire to hold it in place.

Damn I felt stupid after that:(

haha I have done the exact same thing. Holding the truck back while slowly being pushed along on my back. Luckily my wife was outside and got in and held the brake for me.
