Tuck Box Trailer build

This started life as a 1977 GMC C25 longbed 2wd. I purchased the truck for a dump runner/ work truck/ parts donor for the shortbed.

Once I was done with it I pulled a few pieces I needed and sold the rest.

Then, I had to swap the axle for a stripped down empty 14FF I started building for this purpose. One of the snap rings broke off and had to be wrestled out, clean and pack bearings with grease, then reinstall with new seals. 20190329_195757.jpg

Once assembled it was shuffled under the frame.

Cutting the frame directly behind the front body mount makes a perfect angle when you notch directly in front of the rear cab crossmember.

Still have pressure on the low side. I return my bottles with almost nothing in them.

Everyone around here has one of these trailers. I have thought of building/getting one but I just haven't got around to it yet. Pretty sure most don't even bother touching the rear axle but I like how you gutted it and turned it into more of a trailer axle.

I would love to make a matching trailer to drag behind the blazer OR a new 2wd project I've had my head wrapped around. Notch the frame and drop it to match the truck, maybe even bag it. :D

I built mine similar, about 10 years ago. Used a stick of 2x2 with a tongue bolted to it and welded that to the frame with a bunch of plate.

It’s a handy all around trailer, only down side is I find they turn super short and can be a pain to back up vs a normal trailer. Also it seems to be quite picky about heavy loads and their placement :haha:

dorman 555-095 expansion freeze plug fit perfect in the old shaft hole for the spindle to keep the grease or other junk from going in the diff or loosing lube . https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1060143&jsn=254 . i also just cut the axle off the flange and bolt it back on . i already have spare 14ff shafts so i dont need anymore extra .

i build my trailers with a few chunks or c-chanel or boxed tube what ever i could get cheep and easy to keep the tongue long and they ride much better with the longer tongue . also the pickup tool box gets mounted on the outside up front to keep a 8ft box bed and still have storage . i just picked up another toolbox for 70 bucks used in great shape the other day for the 3rd trailer i am going to build soon .

white/red is 2nd trailer built . made the tongue as long as i could before frame kicked up . this is my go to utility trailer these days . 32x11.50x15 on 15x8 gm ralley wheels .
2 tone blue was my first . tongue was shorter did o.k. no problems . also you can see simple front bracket for tool box support and the back just sits and bolts to body mount ear's on frame .now rusty to the point not road worthy so its got a cap and is my seasoned fire wood storage holder .

these trailers ride so nice and smooth .

my 3rd trailer will be a 14ff no center section . 4" schd-40 pipe is 3.50" i.d. and out axle tube slide in them real nice to make a smooth axle . i have a chunk waiting for the spare time to whip it up .

Welded everything up tonight. My vertical and butt welds look good, horizontal fillet welds ok, but the overhead welds look horrible. I'll probably grind them out tomorrow and retry if the weather is still good.
