Not to mention with an auto you aren't stuck in 1 gear.

[/ QUOTE ] hmmm, lets increase wheel speed, and decrease torque. the idea is to pull the truck, not cover it in dirt. /forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

You obviously don't have much experience pulling.... You need to be able to have some decent wheel spd on hand if the other person looses traction so you drag them fast enough that there is no chance of them gaining traction once again. I've never pulled in the dirt so I've never covered anyone in dirt, just tire smoke. Asphalt or nothin'!

With 4.10 gears and Boggers, I don't care what you got for a motor, the instant your engine drops RPM almost 50% that it takes to get from 1st to 2nd gear in a 700, it's going to bog.

[/ QUOTE ] Not in low range.

stock low not double low, and second gear gives me enouf grunt to lug around and still enouf wheel speed to dig some if needed. To me this sounds like were I should be?

from past experiance(equal weight) who ever take's off frirst usually wins.IMO /forums/images/graemlins/k5.gifto /forums/images/graemlins/truck.gif

I disagree. You're not going to be able to pull 2nd with another rig yanking on you no matter what gear/range you're in.

If you were in 4 high you would lose even before your tires spun.

I am running a 500 hp 454, SM 465, doubler, locked ff 14b and locked 35 spline D60 all hooking up on 39.5 boggers.

I'll jump in here with my opinion. There was a tug o war here last year on hard packed clay/dirt. A guy running similar setup to yours did very well with the Hammer It approach just because of traction and HP. He pulled many diesels and bigger trucks easily with LOTS of wheelspin. I was thinking just like tractor pulls if ya got the horsepower and the tires get em movin and you'll do good. If ya don't pull the other truck backwards you'll dig big enough holes to keep yourself from going backwards /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I don't have a doubler so I'm not sure but prolly second gear and low or third and double low to get some revolutions. Experimant with different gear ranges see which one has the best of both low end and tire speed. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif Good luck and get it on film /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

I don't remember seeing what he had for gears, but with a 500hp big block, I don't think the boggers will cause it to bog down, unless he was running 3.73 or higher gears, or unless the other truck was also digging in and had good traction.

I disagree with this, I've seen trucks get second gear before in a tug of war, I think a 500 hp truck will do it fine in low range, unless the other truck is pulling him (has more traction). Granted, with the sm465, shifting will not be a good idea as you can't shift quick enough to maintain your momentum, the other will regain traction, in the time it takes to shift.

Just my opinions on the matter. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

One of two previous tugs I have done was done 2nd gear low range. My 454 started to bog down some but I throtled up to keep from dieing and full pulled the guy.

I think he was talking about me. I am only running 350HP but on 35" boggers. /forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
