I am going to bolt my transmission stand down to a heavy duty steel bench I have that I am going to use to rebuild my transmission. My engine stand currently has a 350 short block attached to it. From your picture the transmission holder does look a little beefier than the advertisment image makes it look.

I like to prep out tables/shelves to take the parts, cover them with paper (or lint-free rags if you prefer), then as parts come out, use the step # in the book to label them. I don't like loose parts on the same bench I'm working at, for fear of knocking something off or getting things mixed up.

How will you be washing the parts?

pressure washer for the case then a storage plastic jug acetone and brake cleaner

For the clutch spring compressor I have a 20-Ton Harbor Freight press. I saw a guy on a video use a press with just a piece of U-shaped steel bent to the correct size to push down lightly on the clutch spring pack. I have watched videos where they just use a pry bar behind the pump to pop it out.

Been a long time since I rebuilt a 400, but I recall either standing the case on it's front and tapping the bell housing on the floor until it fell out (probably with a chunk of carpet to cushion the fall), or just grabbing the pump snout and wiggling it until I could pull it free.

I rebuilt a couple in the garage with nothing more than a press (to help with the drums) and outside of an issue with a reman converter, both of them worked like a charm, and actually held up to quite a bit of abuse.

i have a 12 ton press so that will work for clutch springs, going to get lip seal tool and a pump alignment tool then the rebuild kit hopefully next month

I am going to get a rebuild kit from this guy http://www.jakesperformance.com/ . He has a stage-2 rebuild kits that comes with a lot of parts that fix known weaknesses in GM transmissions.

What is the outer diameter of the tube that goes through the engine stand?

I have previously built them with just a piece of PVC with two toilet mounts to widen it for the vertical stuff and also you can bolt the trans bellhousing to the engine stand with no tools.

But that looks safer and easier if it fits my engine stand.

2"od 1 1/2" id .225 wall tube, I was going to get this and make it more stable than it is now but it will work now
6 inch piece of tube that fool wanted 30 bucks
