Twizted's Front Winch Cradle

I echo the desire to see a more full width version. I WILL be buying one of these in the near future (awesome design), but I would love to see one with some side protection first (rather than building my own sides). If you could PM me with approximate lead time required and projected cost with/without "wings" that would be great. Zip Code 37330. Business address with fork lift available if it makes shipping cheaper.

New Sides for the Winch Cradle

Okay everyone, I finally had a chance to finish the design of some prototype side pieces for the Winch Cradle! I still have to adjust some of the angles on it, but here's the mock-up to give you an idea...

...So I think I am going to stop the sides a little shorter towards the tire than in this prototype for a little better tire clearance for those of you with your fenders cut out more. Also, I'm debating putting a 45 on the outside corner for a little better clearance, but this thing already has more clearance than most anything else I've seen - and it would add more cutting/welding to the product so I'm not sure if I will do that.
Also, I need to get a truck here with full fenders so I can make a different set of sides for those people who do not have their fenders cut - the sides would not come back towards the tires at all in that case, but they would at least offer some more protection than the winch cradle alone.

Tell me what you think!! :)

i think the leading edge is too far forward from the fender... in other words, it needs more angle from the frame to the fender...

Make a nice step though

I would like it up higher so it fills the gap in between the frame and the fender, if you can picture what I mean

I agree completely - and already did that for the second prototype (which is out cooling from tack welding at the moment) Check it out in the soon to follow pics :)

I know what you mean - I'm not sure why that picture looks like it hangs down so far, but it is honestly only about 3/4" below the rad support - any closer and the body will be slamming into it (not that these trucks have any frame flex or anything - yeah, right!)

I am not sure what to do about this... By keeping the top level (and all the available ground clearance), the bottom of the rad support touches the side skirt at the outer edge. I think that it wouldn't be a big problem on an off-road only rig, but I think it will squeak and make noise - not to mention rubbing all the paint off continuously. I hate to lose any ground clearance at the outer edges, but I also don't want to make it any thinner at the outside edge due to strength reasons.

Darren,
Are the shackle points attached to the side like post #27 or on the front like your org design. Just wondering, either way payment will be sent later today. Great job.

I would really like to buy one of these with the sides. My frame is a '77 though. Hmm... I may have to do a little chopping I guess.

Shoot me a pm when you get the price worked up. Shipped to 88220.

Thanks!

The shackle points are back on the front like the original design - I built a few of them with the shackles on the sides, but in the end the front design won out, due to looks and the ability to add the sides to it. I really don't see that strength will be an issue with them on the front, although I don't suggest hanging your truck from a tree with them or anything :) Of course I wouldn't suggest that anyway!

Will do - just so you know, the frames are a slightly different width also, so you may have to make up a spacer or something in addition to cutting the rounded parts off and drilling new holes :) I have had plans to make new brackets for the first gen frame horns, but still haven't got them done yet.
