Hey all, I'm building a new 4x4 as my last one is NFG. I want to build an "unbreakable" drivetrain. Now I know that no drivetrain is unbreakable but I would like a very strong reliable trail rig that can recover itself, basically get unstuck without any other rigs around (ill get into that in a bit). Ill start by telling you what I have. I have A 1985 chevy 1/2 ton SWB. Under it I have a D-60 front with ram assist and crosover steering. In the rear I have a 14bolt with disc brakes. The engine is a fuel injected 350 (stock) and the tranny/tcase is the 32 spline SM465/NP205 combo. I plan on Using the driveshafts that Kert makes at DIY4X because they simply look badass. I will be pushing 38.5x15R16 Boggers with this setup. As for the self recovery side of things I have a warn 12000LB winch in the front and a warn 8000lb winch in the rear.

Next is the WHY? part. I do a bit of offroading with a bunch of buddies, but they are all starting to wind down and not go out as much, and At work there is a large group of guys that go out quadding all the time! I dont want to buy a quad anytime soon, but I would like to go out with them, just to get some trips in. the only problem is that I will be the only truck and if I get stuck, I will have to get myself out. I would like to see a quad pull out a truck. and I dont want to break something and hold them all up.

The trails I run are in the canadian rockies full of mainly mud, dirt, hillclimbs and a bit of rocks. So the final question Is with my tire size what would you upgrade, replace or add to my truck to make it strong enough to wheel independantly from other rigs. thanks for your input!

sounds like you have a great start. FIRST before you buy driveshafts upgrade all 4 yokes to 1450 u joints. then upgrade your d60 to 35 spline outers and some of the gnarly inner u-joints like CTM's. Alloy shafts all the way around.
last of my advice is visit www.diy4x.com and buy all the BEEF Kert sells.

sounds all goood!! lol think yukon shafts would do me good?

longfeilds are copys of toyotas birfields I think but super strong and made for D60 axles. While they are beefy and uber cool they are about $2k for a set and just a bit too much for most people.

all you need to know is......Less horse power = unbreakable drivetrain :haha: seriously though. keep the hp in check.

winches front and back. snatch block. and an anchor for when theres nothing to winch off. cause you know you're not winching off a string of quads.

lol thats funny! But the HP statment is very true I have seen mud racers bust 2.5 ton rockwells with relatively small tires. On the same note I have watched a toyota with d60 and 14b axles and a stock 22r engine bust the d60. he just sat there and wheel hopped the front until it broke.

What Im getting at is I dont think there is such a thing as an "unbreakable drivetrain". But you can "git dawgum clostuet"

OH BY THE WAY! we need pics dood!

im lookin to upgrade my d60 as well...35 splines, ctm joints 1410 yokes, the works...any advice is much appreciated...and $$$ isnt aabig concern as far as the upgrade...not made of $$$, but i like to buy right once...

uh yea thats nice but im not spendin $6000+ on an axle...i want to upgrade what i have...figure i could for a lil less than that new axle from solid axle...
