Unloading Axles - Local Cherry Picker?

I was joking with my buddy and told him that one guy can lift a front 10 bolt by himself. So he did it. I was impressed, and felt like a dick at the same time.

i just used manpower.nothing extra.i just moved the axles to the rear of the truck.pulled one side to the edge and spun it length wise and lowered that end to the ground.then picked up the remaining side and spun it to the ground.then put it on my kids wagon and wheeled it around to where it sat til iu rebuilt it and put disk brakes on it.once the disks were on it i could pick up the axle and carry it.i dont know how i didnt hurt myself.youth definitely has its privilages.now id spend the money and get a lift of some sort.engine hoist would work well because it can get under the truck and the arm will reach inside the burb to pick it out.

This function of the tailgate is definitely different on my burb. My carpeted, plastic trimmed, glass containing tailgate will not be put to abuse like this.

I'd do the same on an older truck, but kinda out of the question on my tailgate.

Chatting with Tom (docfeelgood) about borrowing his picker. Gotta love the brotherhood:woot:

Out east I used to raid a pick and pull that charged $40 for whatever you could physically carry across the scale.

Came across with a 12 bolt with the drums still on and a sea bag full of parts for ballast on my back.

i was gonna say you could try scott (4x4high) i'd offer to borrow you one, but i dont have one so thats a moot point...

good luck tho!

Thanks for the offer.

So far, i look to be covered. Dremu offered to help too.

Thanks guys!

Darren, all you need to do is stick one axle under each arm then remove them from your burb. :D

Cherry picker is your friend here if you don't have access to a forklift.

Engine hoist for sure. I've got a 1250lb'er folding hoist used and abused. It's the only way to fly.

I've wrangled D60 fronts, SBCs, BBCs, dressed 6b cummins, Dana110 rears, Super60 front, all with this picker.

But I've also pulled the tailgate and booted a few diffs out. Believe me doesn't hurt a diff any.

Last time I did this, I bought a case of beer and had three friends help out. It wasn't a challenge at all with four people.

I got a 3" wide nylon strap (doesn't need to be that strong, but the width is more comfortable), and weaved it back and forth under the ends of the axle. It was set up so that each person had the strap wrapped around the back of their neck and running down the length of each of their arms. You give each person enough slack so they can stand up straight and barely bend their knees, then grasp the strap in front of each of their hands. It's much better for your back and it's pretty easy to lift that way with the weight spread over your shoulder and you can do fine control with your hands for balance.

was that out of a burb or a truck tho? seems like it'd be hard to get 4 guys in side a burb that always has two full size axles in it....

If you had access to a pickup truck, you could back it up to the Burb, use plywood to protect the tailgate(s) and use a come-a-long to drag the axles into the truck bed--getting them out of an open bed will be a lot easier than a Suburban with a low roof overhead...!

If i was going to do that, i'd have my office's delivery truck swing by, and i'd slide it onto a lift gate :waytogo:

BUT, this plan would still include the destruction of my back in the moving process.

Going cherry picker.....but like the continued Brainstorming!

No, it was a pickup. Theyre friends, not good friends lol.

you could wriggle a welcome mat, plywood, etc under the rotors and 2 people inside and 1-2 people outside could easily inch it out without damage though, similar to what we did. If you dont drag it, its not going to hurt anything. Hell, get a saw horse to lay the first hub on to, that wojld help too.

Id have,to agree that you need 3-4 guys that arent injured though. If youre going to hurt yourself, just get another friend to help and make burgers or something, no sense in hurting yourself and your ego :)

I have been daydreaming about building an axle stand thats so,ehow both low enough to roll an axle out from under the truck while maintaining pinion angle for welding setup, but also easy to raise up to a comfortable working level/tailgate height. I think it would get more use than a cherry picker evan, at least for me. Maybe it could be telescopic and raised/lowered with two highlift jacks :dunno:

The diff fluid is currently leaking onto a carpet tile. Amazing how useful those material samples become when you're in the construction industry.....

Slid my bmw trans out from under the car on one, use a casework sample of maple to seal my brake bleeder to the master cyl, etc....

haha

Oh man you are such a wuss.
When I was your age, I was carrying a front D44 fully dressed, on my arms and dropping it down or loading it on my blazer.
As for 14bff or worse D60, I used the same technique as The penssylvania guy, one end at a time, I can still do that now, but can't man handle an axle in one shot anymore.:doah:

No, no, no....

You get it in position, and help it slide by pushing.... NOT pulling! :eek1:

:haha:

I dont PULL anything anymore....push only! (especially not a pry bar!)

BTW, I put the 14b on jack stands that I had placed on a piece of 2x8...across a furniture dolly. I used my jack to get the axle on and off the jackstands. That way I could move it around. Looking bad...I would have gotten a cherry picker. They can be found for like $60 on craigslist and would save you a injured back, or worse

Yep, I'm a wuss. With a recent freak shoulder injury, i couldn't put my own car into reverse with my right hand for a few days. :doah:

Its so not worth hurting myself over unloading these. I'll be patient and do it right.

Just have to think more outside the box. I unloaded my 10x10' shed off a flat deck trailer by myself by choking a strap all the way around it, and shackeling it to my other truck and pulling the trailer out from under it.

I like the continued discussion.

Get some good ideas out there.

On this item though, already got a cherry picker and helper lined up for tomorrow.

If i was totally w/o resources, i'd get it on the tailgate manually, and probably hoist it from something in the garage.
