Vortec LB swap into '88 with TBI

What about the harness, ECM etc. Does the 5.7 Vortec use coil packs and not a dizzy?

I just googled it, its a dizzy.

From his reply i'm under the impression that he grabbed a Vortec engine and then bought the TBI to Vortec intake and he's still using his original TBI injection system.

^Yeah, that^ So I got everything in, Got the timing close, cranked it up and it sounded good. It sputters for about 5 sec when it is first cranked up and then smooths out like clockwork, revs up pretty smooth and sounds good. Went to drive it around the block and immediately noticed there was no power, got under the hood and adjusted the timing with a light to exactly tdc, still no power, my mechanic friend says no problem, timing needs to be 10-15 degrees advanced, make the adjustments, still no power and it gets worse the further I drive. I barely got it back up the driveway after taking it around the block, and the check engine light stays on the as soon as it cranks up. I was expecting that with the fact that the egr and the O2 sensor are gone now, but is that the reason why it is running so foul?

You did disconnect the EST wire before setting base timing didn't you? The EST wire is located near the brake booster and should be a single brown wire.

Also you need to run an 02 sensor otherwise the engine will get horrible mileage and lack of power.

No, I did not disconnect any wire. And if I have an O2 sensor and no EGR, will it still solve my issue?

You don't need the EGR, you do need the O2 sensor.

To set base timing correctly you HAVE to disconnect the EST wire.

OK, so I went this morning to the muffler shop and had them put an O2 sensor bung into my exhaust. I went home and ran the check engine light diagnostics and got a 15, 33, 42. I moved the ecm temp sensor to the side of the block since I had unplugged it thinking it was for the stock temp gauge that didn't work, solved 15. I had noticed the vacuum line on the rear of the TBI had come unplugged while adjusting the timing and had ran a couple of times like that but I had already hooked it back up so I think that was the reason for code 33. I had unplugged the EST wire while setting the timing last night after reading 82355's post, so that's why I got code 42. So I unplugged the ECM fuse and let it reset the trouble codes, plugged in my O2 sensor and cranked it up. No more running rough for 5-10 sec when first cranked up and it actually idled up just a tad for 5-10 sec and then back down and smooth... still no power, I let it idle and got no more check engine light but I am getting a popping out of the TBI and it bogs down when I try to rev it up whether it is in gear or not and still noooooo poooooower. I even set the timing again afterward to 10-15 degrees advanced with the EST wire unplugged (check engine light came on while EST unplugged, but went right back off after I plugged it back in) and still no change. So at this point the ONLY thing that is not hooked up is the A/C compressor and the EGR, and the ECM is not even complaining about the EGR...yet.

I doubt the ECM will complain about the EGR. Mine never does.
