Wage92's 78 K5 Build

Yah, went to break my motor in with the old rad still in. Thought itll be good. Heard the motor sing for 3 seconds then the radiator blew a hole in the core and dumped coolant all over my shiny new motor :doah:. Went home, drank a lil, got on CL and bam. Called him early in the am, picked it up, hooked it up, broke her in :thumb:

haha sweet deal :D you break it in on a stand on in the k5? gotta hold it at like 2k rpm for like 30 minutes or something right? think thats what my buddy did.

Vids in my build thread lol. Did it in the blazer, open headers baby! :woot:

Some more work done...

Finally got some time to do a little more on the k5 today, got the brake pedal and booster removed, parking brake pedal, hood and fenders. Now going to pressure wash the frame and rid it of all the mudd!

Also, i see now why rocker panels rust out so bad! Its just like a pocket that collects dirt/water and its just a matter of time! Has anyone ever like slotted the bottom of the rockers so that everything could just flow out?

Alright, just came inside after working on a couple things. Pressure washed the frame and underside for about an hour and got most of the mud off. Cant believe how much was caked up under there! I also decided to do something about my rocker panels, decided to drill holes in the bottoms of them so they can drain out and stuff doesnt get stuck in there. Hopefully that will help them stay rust free for a while :D Did find a small crack on the cross member up front, no big deal i will weld that up before i paint the frame. Next on the list is prep and grind the frame and underside and it will be getting some chassis paint that i have to decide on!

Well took me and my dad about 4 hours and some very careful planning to remove the body from the frame. All we had to work with was one floor jack so we slowly brought the body up equally at all four corners, we already had the legs built and we spanned a 10 foot 4x4 across them, then put the side bracing in, rolled the frame out and put the diagonal braces with a 10 foot 2x4. Now the body is really rigid. Couldnt push it over if i wanted to. Its quite high though haha not the prettiest but definitely functional. from here i will take the frame on first, have a few repairs to make may relocate the rear shocks....any input on this? Thinking of a cross member and having them angled down to the axles. If anyone has a better way or a link with a how to that would be great! Thanks for lookin guys.

Nice :D I pulled my K5's body with one floor jack too so I know how much fun it is :doah:.

On the rear shocks, look at the x member that Kert makes (DIY4X), it allows you to mount them in-between the frame rails. It wouldn't be too hard to build your own version of it or just order one of his, and he also sells a lot of nice little tabs and brackets to use as lower mounts on your axle.

yea someone pointed me toward his. I will either pick that up or price the cost of building one myself! Now i got lots of grinding ahead of me though haha

Put a good couple hours into her today, took all shocks off the frame, sway bar, and some other random brackets that the PO had exhaust hanging off of. Did a few test grinds with different wheels and a wire wheel, came out pretty clean. But i dont want to grind to bare metal until i have primer to put on it. I ordered the paint today, i went with the rustoleum stuff for clean metal. White primer with a gloss black topcoat. Before i get to paint there are a few repairs i need to make, one small crack in a cross member i want to weld up and some of the body mounting holes need to be fixed. Anyone ever done this before and have pictures? I was thinking just a plate that i would weld over the old holes to bring them back to their correct size.

Update!

6 hours of grinding, 8 hours of primer, 3 hours of topcoat= 3 days of making the underside of the cab look better...and it still isnt perfect...

next on the list is repairing body mounts, have to trim up this .125" sheet metal and then weld it on and hole saw the correct size hole in it.

while the welder is out, repair this crack in the engine cross member

and then just got more paint and primer and will be grinding and painting the frame this weekend, weather permitting!

Encouragement or ideas are always welcome!

black, was thinking about a color but i thought it would be too much. When i reassemble everything i will accent it with colors, like my ladder bars will be a different color, steering bar, sway bar stuff like that will be a color, but i decided just gloss black for the frame.

Great job so far :waytogo: I give you lots of credit for doing the outdoor resto :D I complain about my little garage where my K5 is, but I forget sometimes how nice a roof and 4 walls make it :D

Great work
