want to drill and tap boss on np205

Yeah, I tapped the case for threaded pipe plugs instead of the freeze plug style.
Damn great idea !
I’ve kept on hand spare replacement mini freeze plugs for these access holes for years just in case ( never liked the later style rubber insert plugs GM started using in the 80’s ).
Gonna tap em now and never give ‘em another thought.

Maybe just mine but it appears that the 205's with the boss drilled have been made straight for the strut rod to sit flush. Where as mine you can still see the casting line and it's not flat. No biggie I can fix that, just adding the info to this thread.

You can see mine has a slight angle to it. Higher in the middle

@Fastereddie is flat as well.

Makes sense, finished vs unfinished. Facing that I’d think the machine shop is now a better option so they can mill it flat before drilling.

I'm going to try it myself in making it flat. I've already bought all the tools to drill and tap this 205. Use a level and angle grinder and or big grit sand paper. Or have my kids hand sand it or maybe use an orbital sander type thing.

Or a couple of thick structural washers acting as spacers between the case and the bar mounting flange with a little longer bolts to make up the difference.
I would imagine that the bar has enough flex to deal with the washers so that the single bell housing bolt will still work.

But putting the rug-rats to work with a few Brillo pads sounds good too !

My dad had mentioned that as well. Just putting a washer between the 205 and torque bar and longer bolt..

I may go that route, unless my kids do something that warrants "punishment" which shouldn't be hard for them to accomplish.

Clean your tap out often, as in a 1/4 turn, the fillings are what get built up in the flutes of your tap, then snap off in the hole, now you have to grind the broken tap, as it is hardened

Save yourself a lot of grief, and just clean out the flutes

Keeping the tap 90 degrees is critical or it will bind and snap your tap

before drilling and tapping I would have mounted the np205 and then positioned the torque bar into place to center punch the holes locations
