If I am winching and I let off the button under tension the winch will allow rope to spool back out. Is this a warrantied item? Is it comething I can fix myself. never had a winch apart before.

I have looked its something you can fix yourself, you can get all the parts from warn, its one of the projects I need to do this winter my 15k winch the brake is worn out too

Could just be gummed up. I got a used 9.5Ti years ago and it was EXTREMELY hard to shift from neutral to in gear. I tore it all apart and they are insanely simple. If you can do front wheel bearings, you can rebuild a winch. Mine was just all gummed up inside, got all the old nasty grease out and put fresh in and it worked 100% better. Your brake could just be sticking for a very similar reason. Once you get inside, it should be pretty obvious and you'll be able to get the parts you need.

Yeah the brake is just the main problem. The engagement lever is also very hard to move, and pulling rope out in free-spool is damn near impossible. I will give them a call.

Sounds like you've got one full of taco sauce just like mine was. I'd say there's a good chance all it needs is a good internal cleaning and that all the parts are fine.

Ok so I got this thing torn apart. The grease on the clutch end was Yuck! I have no idea how to tell if these little brake shoe pieces are good or bad. I may pick up the seal kit for the two nylon bushings, but I am going to clean them up first and see how they look.

What kind of grease should I use after I degrease?

Here's where I have purchased parts for my 9.5Ti
Had to tear mine apart for the same reason
couldn't get the free spool lever to move at all,
was full of water & the free spool drum was corroded
pretty bad, cleaned it up , used some marine grade grease put some new seals in & reassembled it , good to go now.
