Welding 101 tips and tricks.

The wire I have in there is .030 Flux Core. I was running on the 024 wheel since the roller is worn out.
Funny you mention the liner....It was just replaced since the last guy that used it kinked it just before the point where a jump liner could have fixed it.

I also have a little slight rust on top of the wire, I would assume that would also cause trouble feeding.

You need to get an 030 roller then check the polarity, I'm seeing little BB's all around your beads. That tells me that it is set up for mig and not intershield. You also need a felt wrap that goes between the spool and the rollers and should have some lube to clean the wire and lube the liner.
It's best to use the nozzle made for intershield that way you wont take a chance of clogging up your gas ports in your mig nozzle. Any time you go from mig to intershield you have to change polarity. With intershield you can weld over rust, paint and even galvlnize something you can't do with mig, clean clean clean no mill scale no oil just clean.
I started welding in 1960 and retired in1999 a lot of time behind the hood, biggest wire that I have used by hand was 3/32 diameter same size as a 3/32 welding rod 600amps and 450 inches a minute. That's enough for now PM me if you need any help
.

you are getting better..... still a lot of splatter though...

are you sure you are getting good gas flow out of the nozzle ??
and are you sure you are NOT using flux core wire ?

heat looks good, but you shouldn't have a lot of splatter on your work piece with a MIG..:dunno:

EDIT: didn't see the three posts above.....

get rid of the fluxcore..... use the 75/25 gas..... correct the polarity...... you will be amazed how much better it will work !!:waytogo:

I put down some anti spatter and got this.

now that looks good :thumb:

and yes ditch the flux core and get a bottle of c-25 mix 75/25 as said and some solid core wire .

I have solid copper with the polarity set as reverse, the gas is 75% argon and 25% carbon dioxide.

dooo:doah:

then its looks good . keep up the good work :waytogo:

if anything maybe turn the wire speed down just a twitch and retry that last pass . sometimes I notice little to much wire speed can cause splatter more than normal .

Would the rusty wire be the reason behind the gun not working unless it's straight? I would think it would have some problems with it. it literally is a 33lb spool and quite a bit left, I would hate to get a new liner and have it clog it up again. It kind of has me worried, when I open the side I can see little flakes at the bottom and along the roller.

I think I might try blowing the liner out with compressed air.

Compressed air will introduce more moisture.

Here is a few pictures and a video of what I'm talking about.

I did tighten that down a bit and it seemed to help out a lot. it's a .025-.035 roller.

This video is moving the tripper in my left hand to my heart then extending my arm out.

Get some new wire. You can clean your welding surface until you can eat off it, but that rusted wire isn't helping anything.

Or just practice with it till its gone. Get some angle iron and run welds in it till its full. Get some longer passes going. Run your beads right next to each other and get a whole surface going on.

This is what my practice pieces look like. If you weld two angles together you get four areas to fill in. Thats 70 and 60 rod mixed together. I was doing 60 rod layers and covering them with 70.

And that spring is for??

The tension on the feed for the wire.

Will I be hurting the welder if I use the rusty wire? I would like to use it for practicing. I have some angle iron like that but need to save it for the truck.

It has always been like this sense I got it, the guy said he bought it new and had 5 hours on the machine but it has a harbor freight ground clamp.

Either way it works and I got a great deal.
