Well guys, I've sold all my trucks BUT...

Re: Well guys, I\'ve sold all my trucks BUT...

Well it sounds as though you have found a wheeler. But I have to say this, the ZJ, XJ needs way to much stiffining to wheel hard most guys in my parts have to exo the damn things to keep the suspension links where they need to be. The "late" 4 runners are a damn good truck but to take it out hard core wheeling you would need some serious mods to get it excellent. The TJ is a damn good wheeler however you said you want space for the family.
I'll throw in my vote......the Land Rover Discovery. It already has a fuel injected (Buick)V8 with either a manual or auto, the t-case is all alum. gear driven with close to a 4:1 low range (soon to be in a K5 near you, SSHHH don't tell). It already has solid coil sprung front and rear axles.
With open diffs front and rear it will out wheel almost anything. Add a amall lift lockers and some tires and your un stoppable. Oh and you have a $3000-8000 price range with enough seats for 7......

Re: Well guys, I\'ve sold all my trucks BUT...

What years are do the coil-sprung Discovery's start at?

Re: Well guys, I\'ve sold all my trucks BUT...

I think the disco's started around 93..... But the Range Rovers are coils too and started back in the early to mid 80's!!! I almost bought a 90 RR, but bought my VW instead...(better gas mileage)

Jason would be the man to ask about Rovers, they have at least 3 of them.

I almost like the late 80's models better... it would seem to me that finding parts for a 60's FJ could quickly become an expensive nightmare, agreed?

They have a pretty big following similar to the Toy's, Jeeps, etc.. So parts shouldn't be hard to find!

Well the Discos were imported into the US around '94 they were all coil sprung and are now air bag sprung, you want the '97-'99 they have the good stuff not that the earlier ones don't have good stuff. the Range Rover was imported into the US about '86 and were all coil sprung till about '93 when they went to an air bag setup (also the long wheelbase version, AWESOME truck), then a total redesign in '95 with a totally different body and all, still basically the same undercarriage. They were all solid axles untill about 2002 when they went totally independant front and rear.
I worked on Land Rovers for about 3 years, any questions you have just let me know.

You would be amazed. Most all front axle parts from the early FJ40's in the 60's all the way until the end of the FJ62 in 1990 are interchangeable, the main differences being the conversion to disc brakes. Rear axles are pretty much all the same, with just small changes in width and ring gear size. The same axles are still in wide use today, just not in the united states. Drivetrain is pretty much the same way, they all have a veriation of the F series inline 6 (no, not ford F series), and the same goes for the tranny/t-case.

The only parts that are difficult to attain is really just sheetmetal and body parts. And once again, there are places to get those. There really isnt much at all to those vehicles, the FJ40's.

Cruise arround Ih8mud.com some, a lot of really good and useful information arround there.

Re: Well guys, I\'ve sold all my trucks BUT...

Dan, if you want to go with a Disco or a RR that would be awesome. You will pay some cash for the parts, but it would be a sweet trail rig. We are dropping in a mildly built 3.9L V8 thats carb'd into a 95 RR, and making it a 5spd as we speak. There are plenty of used RRs out there. Here is a site if you want to do more reading on them.

Re: Well guys, I\'ve sold all my trucks BUT...

dan, there's quite a few old flatfenders down by me in the 1200 range....I think that's what I'm going to shoot for in a couple years, swap in a set of waggy 44's and 35's and just have fun!

Re: Well guys, I\'ve sold all my trucks BUT...

Problem with flatfenders is the size of the passenger compartment. 4 people feel like sardines in that thing.

You sold your fullsize, don't bitch about space!!!

Re: Well guys, I\'ve sold all my trucks BUT...

Ya know what Timmay... if I didn't think I could break you in two with one blow, I'd kick your skinny whiteass. I did ditch the fullsize. My lovely town would have had me in the courthouse by now trying to sue me for decreasing the value of the homes in my neighborhood, pissing of the neighbors, and having a truck "too tall" for their gay freakin rules. Fact of the matter is I still have a big family I want to take wheeling, so I need a rig that can fit people. So be constructive, or shove off.

I'm kidding dude, DAMN!! Relax. /forums/images/graemlins/rotfl.gif

You can store your rig here when it gets too bashed up to keep in your driveway. /forums/images/graemlins/waytogo.gif

Re: Well guys, I\'ve sold all my trucks BUT...

Dood. I have no rig. I haven't wheeled since, what? March? Man, I'm on the edge of loosing it. You think I can relax? Hell no. Thanks for the offer though!
