Re: Well I\'m back to working on the frame - Shackle angles and 52\'s

I am at 7" now and could use more
heavily arc'd springs though, they flatten out a long way so I need to bumpstop them

Re: Well I\'m back to working on the frame - Shackle angles and 52\'s

I guess it looks like it might work out, have to see after the body and motor get put on.

bolts will be 1/2" uppers and 9/16" lowers. I still need to do some 1/4" spacers and drill out the upper poly bushings. So I need some 3/4" outside 1/2" inside sleeves.

This is what I did... but I spent the $15 and got the bushings, sleeves, and bolts from ORD... http://offroaddesign.com/catalog/fushacklebushing.htm

I just pulled out the metal sleeve in the upper shackle bushing and am running a 5/8 bolt in there, and a 9/16 bolt in the lower and in the front mount.

Re: Well I\'m back to working on the frame - Shackle angles and 52\'s

what did you tighten the shackle down to? They tighten down to the sleeve dont they?

Re: Well I\'m back to working on the frame - Shackle angles and 52\'s

Why would you want to tighten those bolts at all? Get yourself some prevailing torque style lock nuts and don't even tighten them, just snug them up with a ratchet.

Thats ine thick shackle you have there! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I always tighten my shackles down til the metal tightens up to the bushing and bulges slightly. Then back it off til the bulge is about gone.

I'm gonna agree with Mike...
But before I would tighten them...
I'd put the weight of the rig on them first..
so the bushings don't get premature ware!!! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Definately.. I was thinking the rig was together and on the ground when I typed up my opinion. DOH! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Thanks Jerry.

Re: Well I\'m back to working on the frame - Shackle angles and 52\'s

Your bushing sleeve should set the "crush" on the bushing. If the bushing is bulging out, either the sleeve is collapsing, or its not wide enough for the bushing. Running without the bolts torqued to spec is not a good idea IMO.

Re: Well I\'m back to working on the frame - Shackle angles and 52\'s

yeah I want the sleeve in there, I'll probley order the ORD bushings since thats what I put in my DD.

Any idea on where to get grade 8 9/16" zink coated bolts? none of the places around here carry that large or many grade 8's for that matter! There's bolt maker here in town but I doubt they sell direct in small quantities. /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

Re: Well I\'m back to working on the frame - Shackle angles and 52\'s

9/16 is not a common size so you're probably going to need to consult your local hardware supplier for a set.

If you want a whole box, your local auto parts store can order them in dorman.

I usually use the nylon lock nuts but lately I've been buying/finding the other kind that looks like an acorn

I agree absolutely. I don't know why everyone wants to run loose shackles. I think that likely accounts for a lot of the sheared bolts. If you want to give it a little more room, make some slightly longer sleeves from chro-mo. I got some at the local spring shop and they just gave them to me after cutting them to size. Running with the bolts tight doesn't reduce the bind/flex by any significant amount, and it will cut down on wear and subsequent breakage...
