Black Betty is a 91 has a 350 engine TBI 700R trans from a rebuild about five years ago(? Excuse my lack of knowledge and attempts to pass on the info I think I know!) engine also rebuilt around that time. Tcase is NP241c
As dirty as she is she has seemed to be well maintained with out cheaply done or half ass upgrades, done thoroughly. I still have the window sticker from when she was purchased. Lol well this being it is my first post, it has taken me two months to figure out how to navigate this website. Idk where to start, but I think I got some good pictures today and definitely found some issues. Tcase is completely cracked to shit. Where the front part of it connects there are two bolts missing. All the way up at the bell housing for the trans meets the engine there is a recent clean break but I cannot tell what used to be there. My purpose is knowledge so I can work on and learn more about her. She almost cost me my marriage when I bought her may of 2018, pretty sure she will finish it off as I begin to tear her apart. I just want to trace back where the problem started not what what I know, which is the transfer case is cracked lol. I hope this makes sense and appreciate any direction you have for me as long as it’s in the right direction. I will photos over to upload momentarily

If the front driveshaft is stuck or frozen or too long, it can bind and crack your transfercase just going down the road as the suspension moves. You are missing a couple transfer case bolts and a bell housing bolt. There should be a brace that bolts to the tcase on the side 2 bolt holes, and runs up to the missing bell housing bolt.

The bolts on the side by the T.V. cable (pic 7) looks to be on an earlier year 700r4 pressure taps for a guage, 86 and earlier non-aux valve body...my 89 case doesnt have it, my 85 case does. It also looks like a tab broke or was cut off right next to the missing bell housing bolt on the transmission bell housing. The starter wires shield attaches to the 2 lower bell housing bolts in your pics and is hanging there.

In the 6th picture, there isn't anything that goes in those threaded holes. I always figured it was something used on 2wd vehicles.

I would guess someone either bottomed out the drive shaft (or it was seized up like @onetonbb74 mentioned) or hit the transfer case on something. I'll bet it's driveshaft related tho.

Well that fits because.......this......tow truck driver pointed this out, saying that you weren’t supposed to be able to see any of those lines on the shaft.
My first steps will be tear down? The transmission as well? Thanks guys

So I found a 4l80e and transfer case he’s willing to separate for $100 just the t case or $200 for both. Is this something to jump on?

Wrong drop. You are stuck with the '89-91 V-series (old body style) trucks for donor rigs with the "electric speedometer" (VSS) NP241. The 1989 241 won't be right, but the parts needed would swap over.

Plus if it's behind a 4L80, it will be 32 spline input not the 27 you need.

4l80 swap! for 200 bux I would grab that 4l80 in a hurry and sell the t-case to recoup some of the cost. like @dyeager said, that model has the wrong drop t-case for your rig (unless a ford D60 front is in your future - whole nother can o worms).

the 241 is a very good chain T-case. You need to pull it out what ever you do so I would...pull the T-case and take it to a shop for a rebuild quote..if the internals are still good your just looking at case halves which chances are good a tranny shop will have on a shelf ...you could throw a stronger chain in there while its apart..parts for that are not hard to get

Hey now, don’t use the “F” word on this forum
