West Texas offroad

I'll post a picture of it tomorrow but I feel the adjuster screw is sticking out more then it was before I did the hydro assist. Which is why I feel like I might have screwed something up.

I tried to do a rebuild on a GM box years back. I screwed something up and only had power left, not right. They are a bit confusing to me, I haven't tried again but would like to figure them out.

I believe it was a core swap, not certain. The JK stuff is so hot right now everyone has the parts available. At least the jeep has some GM in it now. LS3/6L80/Atlas3.8.

I drove a 2017 with 35" tires stock steering and the swapped 2007 with the 40"tires and west texas steering back to back. The 2 drove basically the same. The 40" were effortless to turn, even slow on pavement.

Oh ok so I might just be able to send them my old box and see if they will send me a new one drilled and tapped.

What size was the ram? I've got a 2"x8" I think and it makes my steering a little slower. I'm only running 37s so I wanna stop down to a 1.5"x8 ram and see if that improves the lag a little.

I was gonna rebuild it because everything I read looks simple...but having a big truck and steering being something kinda major, I dont wanna mess with it. Rather leave that to someone who knows what they are doing haha.

Once you’ve done a couple boxes, it gets easy

I am not a fan of the cap ends tapped or 2” cylinders. Both require more flow and pressure than the side of the box and a 1.5”

Call them, I’ve always had better luck that way.

Ok I'll give them a call tomorrow. Well the ram was part of my axles when I bought them so really the only money I spent on the hydro assist was the caps and that's it.

I wanna go smaller ram, drilled and tapped box and reuse my lines. Maybe I should just get everything from west Texas offroad.

its not hard at all to set the adjuster screw .

old gm tech told me . turn in till it just hits and back off a little bit . no more than 1/4 turn . hold screw and lock the nut down .

You MUST make sure the box is centered before making the adjustment or you'll be in for a wild ride when the top cover either explodes or the steering gear won't go past center.

Anyone use them? I want to send them a steering box to have them port and tap for hydro assist. I dont like the set up I have, I screwed it up installing it and wanna go a different route.

Any one have any good or bad from them?

It's not hard to drill and tap your own box. I did mine and I used to do it for many people but I just don't have the time anymore.

Everything was centered, I did it all while the box was still on the truck lol

I rather have someone else do it. It would be just my luck I drill in the wrong spot or to far and maybe end up leaving metal shavings inside.

That why you take it apart

Next time you have a junker, go for it just for the experience. I can send you the chilton pages if ya ever need

I picked up one of their boxes from a guy last year, it is a nice box, I haven’t had any issues, I’m running the surplus center ram and it steers well.

WTO is where I did some research when I built my hydro assist. Works great.

I agree on the tapping end caps vs the box itself. The end all reason I chose to tap the caps was I can switch them from box to box if I ever need.

I personally run a 2in ram, and honestly with my astrovan pump drilled out and good fluid it steers pretty well. I mean it's no Honda Civic by any means but it does decent at keeping up. In all reality it would drive down the highway fine as your not making quick course corrections anyways. For the record I have never driven a 1.5in ram equipped vehicle. So take it for what it's worth.

The caps are what I did for that exact reason but I'm not skilled enough to know how to put things back and readjust everything. I miss my truck. Been almost 2 years since I've actually driven my truck and its killing me a lot. I'm sure you and everyone else can agree, it's just a different feeling of joy driving our trucks. I just want it to work :(

I dont plan on going bigger then 37s so I think the smaller ram will be enough for me plus the guy that I bought my axles from, I feel like he 1/2assed the hydro assist install because the ram just barely fits in the tabs he welded to the axle/tierod. You kinda have to force it to get in it and working.

How did you drill the top cap? I'm interested why you are even needing to mess with the adjustment screw?

I did a DIY4x end cap, and then drilled the top cap myself. All I did was undo the 4 bolts on the top of the box holding the top cap on, along with unbolting the steering arm on the bottom of the box, and pulled the whole sector shaft out as one. Drilled and tapped the top cap where I wanted, then installed the whole sector shaft as one again. I never had to touch the adjustment nut at all. Been running it that way for 5 years now with no problems at all

I pulled the top cap off and sent it to DIY4X to have him drill and tap it for me. When I went to put it back on is when I screwed up. I didnt know enough about pulling the whole sector shaft out. I know now.

Whats the best way to send a steering box to west texas offroad to have them drill and tap it for hydro assist? Also does anyone know about how much it cost to ship a steering box about that far? I'm in California.
