What do I need to look for in buying these axles

I wouldn't pay anything near $400 for a pair of 1/2 ton axles.

I'm getting ready to part out an '85 K20 that has a 10 bolt front and 14 bolt rear semi-floater both with 3.42's in them. And my price will be $500 when I'm ready to sell or list them. And yes, these are 8 lugs, too.

I gues what it comes down to is preferences and needs. For me, I wouldn't pay 500 for a pair of axles with 3.42s. If these axles only had 3.42s I wouldn't even think of looking at them. It's the gears and possible crossover steering parts that have me interested.

Axles are cheap. Buying good gears, rebuild kits, a possible carrier or two and having them setup right is expensive.

I wouldn't pay $500 for a set of 3/4 ton axles that had a semi floater rear axle. $400 for what you are looking at is a better deal if they do have crossover.

Crossover is a couple hundred on its own even used. So you got that working. After that you are paying A hundred per axle and You can't get a gear and install kit for that much. I'd they are gone through check the gears as you said and the ball joints and steering links should be tight too. Spin the rotors and check smooth rotation of Everything. When you open it you will see what lockers are in there. 12 bolt stock would be a limited slip with clutches. If you see gears and separated side gears it will b a auto locker and stronger. Would be nice to see a Detroit in there. 500 bucks on its Own and you get a stronger carrier. They should All bolt in. 1/2 ton pre 73 was skinnier axle Perch same as oneton rear. I believe they were same up front. So you should be fine there. Other than looking for leaks out the axle tubes and all thats about it.

Oh wait. I made a typo. It should have read $5.00 instead. :surepal: Is that better for you?

Axles are worth what anybody wants to pay for them. All depends on their wants and needs.

I'd like to see pics of the said axles in the first post. Especially of the crossover arm. I have my doubts that the seller doesn't know what they have and are misinformed of what they've got.

Exactly thatK30guy. Thats what I mean All depends on what one is looking for and what one needs. I think we are all on the same page just talking a different language:waytogo:

I plan to take pics even if I pass on them. Like I said. Both my friend (the one who told me about these) and his neighbor (the one who inherited these from his brother) are both not into wheelin much and not into chevys much either.

So right now ALL the info is up in the air.

Actually I would love to see ARBs in these but thats aiming to high in the clouds:whistle:

yeah, too much reading:doah:

to the point....get em'

they are geared the same
no changing rims
supposedly rebuilt (I hope that means ball joints)
some kind of traction aid in both

that alone is worth it, IF they are all that was said to be
it is expensive and time consuming to rebuild axles, even 1/2 tons
you couldn't rebuild and regear yours for that price (you have to honestly factor in what your time is worth, even @ 2-3 beers an hour)

then you added crossover
as long as it's not hokey :waytogo:

The car and truck 12 bolts might as well be two different rears considering there's gear differences. Car 12 bolts will be way narrower and have 4 link brackets. Truck 12 bolts will be wide and either have spring or truck arm perches.

I've always heard that the car 12 bolt is far superior to the truck version but that could be a.comparison difference of power vs tires.

While I researching the 12 bolt all the car guys said the truck axle was worthless because it has a . something smaller pinion bearing.

It's closer to their actual worth. I turn down offers to buy complete 3/4 tons for $500 if they have semi floaters.

You can't fault people for trying to sell 3/4 tons for $500 because they probably would like to make some kind of coin off them and its highly likely they're not gonna just give them away for free. Hence the quotes above of axle prices being what a buyer would pay for depending on their wants and needs. Its all about supply and demand. In your case, while the supply is out there your demand isn't met because simply the rear is a semi-floater. Doesn't mean you have to bash on that simple little fact because theres probably more people than you think that are actually looking for that specific rear. Why, you ask? Ever think about converting the front 10 bolt over to 6 lug and then getting wheel spacers/adaptors to convert the rear to 6 lugs? Think about that one for a moment. Such said axles would still be stronger and beneficial over any 10 or 12 bolt along with any D44, too.

And before you try to correct or fix this quote I made above, yes, the more obvious reason to converting the 14SF over to 6 lug to match the front would be to swap the rear shafts out for actual 6 luggers. But we're talking both ways of doing something the cheap way or the stronger way. And again, its all in the wants and needs of the potential buyer.
