What do I need to look for in buying these axles

You can't fault people for trying to sell 3/4 tons for $500 because they probably would like to make some kind of coin off them and its highly likely they're not gonna just give them away for free. Hence the quotes above of axle prices being what a buyer would pay for depending on their wants and needs. Its all about supply and demand. In your case, while the supply is out there your demand isn't met because simply the rear is a semi-floater. Doesn't mean you have to bash on that simple little fact because theres probably more people than you think that are actually looking for that specific rear. Why, you ask? Ever think about converting the front 10 bolt over to 6 lug and then getting wheel spacers/adaptors to convert the rear to 6 lugs? Think about that one for a moment. Such said axles would still be stronger and beneficial over any 10 or 12 bolt along with any D44, too.

And before you try to correct or fix this quote I made above, yes, the more obvious reason to converting the 14SF over to 6 lug to match the front would be to swap the rear shafts out for actual 6 luggers. But we're talking both ways of doing something the cheap way or the stronger way. And again, its all in the wants and needs of the potential buyer.

I wouldn't pay anything near $400 for a pair of 1/2 ton axles.

So only you are allowed to fault someone for charging "too much"???

Come on guys, can we stay on topic here? I don't want my thread to become some pissing match.:dunno:

Some people will pay more for other things then some other people and there in just the opposite.

It all depends on what the person is looking for and also the area from which items are being sold. some bring more prices then others. Hell junkyards still ask 400-800 just for one axle. We all know they are smoking something.

probably more then half the members here would not bother with a 10bolt or 12 bolt. For my application if the axles are the way I am told they are will be perfect.

If they are as they were described to you, I would agree.

All I know is a 12 bolt didn't come in an 87.
It cost me more than $500.00 to covert my 3/4 ton 10 bolt for crossover steering. That was not including the 2 wheel drive box I already had on the blazer.

If they are even close to what you described you could probably sell them for more then what they are asking for them.

Ok updates

What I got was the left overs of a FS chevy gold mine. Here is the tally, pics will be later.

10B front chromed out NO HD Crossover
12B rear chromed rear.
Could not verify gears of "posis" as the chrome covers were allen bolts and all I brought was sockets. He said he checked out the 12B and its an Eaton with 4.10s. but never verified the front 10 bolt.

Guy kinda felt bad because I was looking at walking so he tossed in another 10B with Premium warn hubs and a 14BFF with open diff 4.56s

I paid his friend with a trailer $30 to deliver so I should have them in an hour or two.

The wife got two BFG MT 35x12.50s for flower beds tossed in for free!:D

So $400 got me 4 axles, not 2.

You scored there, my friend.

I was skeptical of the crossover steering stuff so it doesn't surprise me it didn't have it because a lot of guys I've dealt with don't know what they're talking about and just rely on what their buddies tell them.

IMO, the score in that deal you got here is the 14FF with 4.56's. But everything else made it sweeter and too hard to turn down.

Now the big Q....is the 2nd 10b 8 lug and 4:56s to match the 14bff?

Sounds like you got a real good deal that. And you can get what you need and still make money on what you don't need to buy crossover steering or something else.

Nertz! Deliver of axles is tomorrow morning, He was already running late for another thing tonite I told him he could drop them off in the morning. Oh well, we will see what I have exactly tomorrow then.

The thing that has me concerned is I need to figure out which 14bolt I have. I know its the 10.5 ring gear but according to Randys R&P there are 5 different master overhaul kits. S0 I need to narrow down the year.

I know all that chrome is hitting craigslist cheap.

as soon as I get them in the shop I will post up pics.

pop the cover and check date stamp on ring gear.

or the rest is 3rd pinion support bearing 2 styles and 2 diffrent inner pinion main bearings with 2 diffrent style seals used . thats the basics on the kit diffrences.

That's a awesome deal. Matching front 8 lug?id use the 3/4 tons if they are good. Oh yeah you didn't want them. Worth much more when it has a Detroit. At least you didn't pass on the first set. That's awesome. Too bad he does have any random 60s sitting around in the axle pile. Lol. If you are looking for rebuild kit are you thinking of going 3/4 ton now?if everything looks good and feels tight you may not have to rebuild it. Put new seals and run it.

4 days ago he did have a matching D60 and 14bff he dumped for 500.

None of the fronts are 3/4ton, but I have decided to move to eight lug. I want the bigger brakes anyways.

I may just have to run wheel spacers till I get new tires and 16s.

The even better part is the WMS to WMS is 67 on the 14B and my stock 10bolt in my 91 burb is 65. Also the spring perches and shock mounts all match up. I aint gotta move chit!

good for 3/4 ton as a lot had baby size drum brakes.

and if you need parking brake and no real mud play i would keep it.

if you play in mud and or have driveline ebrake kit then i would do disk.
