Just as the title says.

I am going to be looking at a 10 bolt and a 12 bolt set of axles. Its thru a friend whos neighbors brother passed away and he inherited these axles and does not want them. This is what I know so far

$400 for the set
All suppose to be gone thru and not bolted to a truck yet.
10 bolt front
12 bolt rear
supposedly out of a 87
4.10s
"posi" in both (no other info)
Chrome diff covers
Chrome trusses
a bunch of other bolt on chrome crap
4" rancho front springs
6 lug

What if anything should I look out for or verify.

I am getting these mainly for the gears and whatever posi is in them. I know its not a 14 bolt but I have 10B front and rear and open 3.42s.I was going with a tape measure to check WMS to WMS and spring perch width.

I figure sell whatever crhome is there and sell the rancho springs and recoup some $$.

if it were me, and i was gonna spend 400 bucks on axles, id wait a little longer and spend a couple hundred more to get a 3/4 ton combo at least. not that much more, i got a 14b/d44 for 600 bucks.

Out of an 87 the rear will be a 10 bolt. But just cause they said they came out of an 87 doesn't mean they did.

Not a ton of strength difference between the 2.

Just look and make sure they have been gone through.

The gears alone are worth it if you need to regear and don't want to switch to 8 lug stuff.

The posis are more than likely the factory gov loc, its not such a good differential as it is small and lots of very small parts in it.

But better than open

I did forget to add the steering been upgraded to the crossover steering as well.

Ok, so aside from the normal get bigger axles. is there anything I should look for?

I know you probably dont want to hear this, but i wouldnt waste my money on them. You can get a 14 bolt sf, put new perches and shock mounts and prob. already have 4.10s in it, all for under 300$. (providing u find a good used 14sf). BUT, if u want to buy them, it sounds like theres already been a good bit of $$ in them. I'd at least pull the diff covers and check the fluid and look for obvious signs of wear or metal.

Again, its just my opinion, and according to my wife, it dont mean S##t:thumb:

if you are going to stay 6 lug and are good with that, sound like a heck of a deal now that you added crossover lol

Thank you for some valid info blazinzuk. Like I said this is whats been told to me second hand thru two guys that are not THAT big into wheelin or chevys. So I wont know until I get to look at them on Saturday.

Yes the whole idea is to save on the gears. I am hoping they are not gove locks and something else. but "posi to these guys could be limited slips or lockers.

I plan to open the diffs before buying them.

I plan to pull the covers before money is exchanged but these are also suppose to be new setups never used yet.

Dude if it has crossover steering its totally worth it.

While you can certainly get some 3/4 tons and have a stronger rear axle. Its worth it for the crossover.

Besides with 4.10s in the front already be super easy later on to switch to a 14 bolt rear and 8 lug stuff up front. If you so desire.

Or a 14 bolt SF and stay 6 lug. Just takes a while to find one with 4.10 factory gears

Yah, crossover is kinda a big thing to skip over in the first post lol

I just rechecked the text message and it says "Heavy Duty Everything". I guess we will see on Saturday.

12 bolt trucks I guess stopped in 82? how are the spring perches and shock mounts for me on mounting to my 91 burb?

Just to rule it out. is it easy to tell the difference from the car 12b tot he truck 12b? I assume you will see the upper control arm ears on the top of the center section?

12 bolt 10 bolt its all the same. I think there was a yoke change somewhere along the lines? I could be wrong.

Pull the covers. Check gear condition, as well as verify ratio based on gear tooth markings.

yeah, basically i was going to show up with some jack stands, (to support axle during inspection) some rtv to reseal the covers when done and some gear tooth compound to check pattern.

It may be a bit annoying for the guy but if I am spending 400 on a 10 bolt and a 12bolt I want to be sure what I am getting!

i believe the only difference in the car and truck 12 bolt is something with the pinion length or size or something. lol
