thinking about getting this as soon as my burban is sold. the sale is pending on the burban should be sold this coming thursday.

so whatcha guys think? I know it's not a chevy but whatever I love XJ's been talking to the guys the past few days about the rig. the motor has 80k and runs nice and strong. gets around 16mpg.

if I get it it's going to be my DD/weekend warrior to replace the burban.

No mention on cost?

Seems fine. IF I was ever to build up an XJ, it would be like this one

will it get you back on the trails with us?

Iguess its almost a compact burb

We had an 88 XJ for about 6 years and it was a pos. Ask him to show you how to check for codes...88 and 89 the computers were so primitive you couldn't even code check them. Got a prob...tough luck. The closed loop cooling system was stock for '88 btw.

16 is highly unlikely, ours which was stock never got better than 14...and that was all highway.

I'd run away, or at the very least find a newer version of the same if you got your heart set on an XJ. They got OK by about '94.

also thinking about this rig 2

he wants 4500 for the rig

I'd take the toyota before the jeep, even though the jeep is better "built up".

Is backspacing going out of style?!@#!:doah:

I like the 'yota much better, though he doesn't mention lockers.

Cherokees usually don't last more than a few years on the trail before their unibodies start tearing apart.

I like the small backspacing on the wheels, especially on a narrow rig like an XJ or Toyota. It helps keep the rig stable.

it's open front and back.

I'm with 38377k5. If you're interested in mileage, get the Toyota. No body I know gets 16 with a Cherokee. I get better mileage with my V8 Dakota. (and unibodies suck!!)

Well, I am chev gmc biased, but I have owned a few cherokees (in fact I do now)
ap08-048.jpg

This one is a 91 with like 80k.

Anyway I noticed alot of people are quick to put down a cherokee due to cracking body. I wheeled the wee out of my first 85 XJ (even had the dreaded 2.8) and never got cracks. Never got cracks in any of them in fact.
I used to be a member of a XJ club. I noticed the guys that had nice lifts on their rides never got cracks because the suspention soaked up the stress. But the guys with coil spacers and maxed out link arms got cracks. I would imagine its the same on almost anything though.

I have never owned a yota 4x4. I had a ceilica for about 3 days before I blew up the engine though. Toys have a good reputation and everyone has seen them wheel hard.

For me bottom line is the jeep is american (mostly) better built, and has 4 doors to take your friends. Plate the outsides of the "frame" and you should be fine. I know they are unibody but they have formed in frame rails, plate steel welded to that structure seams to stiffen the body up pretty well.

Well in the 80's they were still being made by AMC..."Alcoholic's Making Cars"...which was not Jeep's high point for design or quality.

What is the issue with your burb? you spend all that time building it then want to sell it. Is it gas prices? I under stand there INSANE right now but getting another truck with possibly better gas milage that you KNOW you will want to throw money at is no different then just dealing with the hi price of gas. Is the size of it too big? Why not build a K5? Build a K5 and daily drive a grocery getter for economy. Smaller rig and cheaper gas DD, Problem solved. :D

I wouldn't count on the 'yota getting much better than 20 mpg.

I do still think its a much better platform though.

trust me I thought about keeping the sub robert.
when I say dd it's only going to be driven a few days out of the week if that. I drive my GF 2004 toyota camery more than anything. but anyways I've always wanted a XJ my dad use to have one that we wheeled before before I got the sub. I want a smaller rig to go offroading in. I plan on hitting the dunes more pismo and glamis. and the main thing hit the trails more. the sub had no problems getting to the trails and back and I use to DD 5 days a week. if I could do the whole thing over I would have gotten an xj from the start and put all my time and money into that than the suburban. live and learn I guess. time for something different. Ima still hit the trails with the socal crew once I get my new rig. the new owner should be pretty happy with the burb once he gets his hands on it.
