I've got my K5 and a Jeep, so I'm trying to put together a kit of supplies that I can dump into whichever vehicle I'm taking. I got a couple of these cool canvas parachute bags that can easily fit more than I can lift. I'm trying to figure out what I'm forgetting. So far:

- Both vehicles have a spare, a pavement jack and a hi-lift, and a lug wrench no matter what.

In the kit (no particular order):
- Jumper cables
- Socket set
- English and metric wrench sets
- Various screwdrivers
- Various pliers, adjustable wrenches, side cutters
- First aid kit
- Survival kit (ways to make fire, water filter, etc etc)
- Several hunks of 4x4 wood
- Bottle jack (will add base and extensions)
- Coveralls and gloves
- Spare oil and funnel
- Fire extinguisher
- Flashlight(s)
- Tie plug kit
- Rags
- Portable shovel
- Tow strap
- Radiator hose repair kit
- Haynes manual
- Baling wire
- Electrical wire, fuses, zip ties
- Various size hose clamps
- WD-40
- Foldable shovel
- Clevis hooks
- Rubber mallet
- Electrical and duct tape
- Rags
- Survival knife

Things I think I'm missing
- More big tools (1/2" socket set, breaker bar, big channel locks, big adjustable wrench)
- Spare parts
- Other fluids (brake, power steering)
- Vice grips

Cool stuff I'm too cheap for at the moment
- Solar battery charger
- Mini starter battery
- Winch
- CB Radio

This can get out of hand pretty quickly, but chime in on what I'm missing.

All that, including the winch and CB
winch kit, shackles, snatch blocks, tree strap
hand saw
axe
spare batteries
spare remote for winch
minature battery jump box
dual batteries
bottled water
energy bars
spare clothes/jacket/boots depending on weather
maps of forest trails in the area
snatch strap
flares
full size spare
high lift jack
sledge hammer
45 acp and spare clips

One note on your list; don't pack the extinguisher and first aid kit in the big bag with the other stuff.. odds are if you need them you don't have time to go digging.

The nice thing about a K5 is that it has that center console that is huge and deep, you can really fit a lot of stuff in there. I keep all my emergency supplies, cables, fluids, etc in there and still have room to spare.

I probably pack way to much stuff, but twice now the junk I packed has gotten someone else home. In addition to most of the things already mentioned, I take a fuel pump, axle shafts, and any little misc. O-rings and fasteners I notice myself using very often.

yep.. I have an assortment of tie wraps, hose clamps, roll of bailing wire, and electrical connectors.. JB quick weld, water weld

Nice thing about the Jeep is the spare tire well in the back, holds a ton of junk!

In my plow truck I carry most of the items others here listed...
I wish it had more storage space--my front floor on the passenger side lately has had a gallon of 15W-40 oil,an old cooler I keep quarts of ATF and brake fluid in,and I've had to carry a battery lately,to boost it if needed to get it started-(the 2 batteries in it were there when I got it in 2003 and were not new then,so they are on their last legs)...so forget having anyone ride shotgun!..

The toolbox in the bed has some tools in a old craftsman box,not "good" ones either,in case they got stolen..thats where I keep the jack(s) and handles for them, the lug wrench, and many spare parts that I fear may be needed someday far from home..even if I cant install them on the roadside,at least I have them if it has to be towed in to a service station on a sunday.

Behind the seat I keep a 1500 lb 12V winch, several chains with hooks, spare fan belts, some rubber fuel lines of various sizes,a hunk of heater hose in 5/8" and 3/4",hose clamps, and a few hunks of EMT electrical conduit that fits both heater hoses to use as splices, and a two hunks of pipe that will fit the radiator hoses for splicing if one decided to pop on the road too..

In the bed I keep a few short lengths of 4x4 or larger posts and a piece of cordwood about 8" thick x 12" high to use as wheel chocks ,etc, and a 5 gallon metal can that race fuel came in to keep a gallon or two of fuel in,so I can hopefully get to a gas station should I run out or get real low on fuel..also have windshield washer fluid ,anti-freeze (even old 50/50 stuff I got from a junk car is better than none!),and I also keep a few empty gallon jugs too,you never know when you'll need one to hold fluids that might be leaking,or have to be drained and replaced on the road in a pinch..

In my van,I carried a spare everything with me,when I drove it to TN!--I took a spare starter,an electric fuel pump,U-joints,spark plugs, old HEI distributor complete with coil and wires,so if I fried a module or pick up coil I could just stab it in and go--had spare fan belts, gas filter, oil filter, oil,ATF,brake fluid, jumper cables, spare battery,etc--just about everything but a spare tranny, wich I had back at my garage at home, but figured I'd probably not be up to swapping it in the breakdown lane..

I did bring a first aid kit with bandages,antiseptic,asprins,etc--but 25 years later, they are still in the box..like the old saying goes--if you have it,you'll never need it...I never had a problem going the 3500 miles with the van, seeing I had just about everything I might have needed...had I not, well, you can rest assured I would have..

Since I dont go far now very often,I dont carry as much with me as before--if I were going on a long ride I would pile a bunch of items in the truck though...most importantly a cell phone,to be used ONLY if I need to call for assistance..about the only reason I own one or use it for now!..

I would add that I also bring along any parts that are awaiting installation or that seem likely to fail. 'Cause if the mechanical fuel pump dies out on the road it sure is nice to have that new electric replacement handy. Rather than wishing for it when it does fail...

Extinguisher mount. Made to avoid drilling new holes.

Thats a real tidy install. Did you design that piece?

Fire extinguishers are nice, and I probably should have at least one on board in my truck...it is one of those things thats better to have and not need, than need and not have...but since I've had no fires in the 36 years since I got my license,I guess one wasn't high on my list of priorities...the few carb flare ups I've had I was able to either blow out,or put out by cranking the engine over..

Now that my truck is not really worth risking my life to extinguish if it caught on fire,I would probably just run away and let it burn,my fire & theft coverage is paid up!.. .I'd also be more likely to use the extinguisher on someone else's vehicle than my own,if I came across an accident victim or other potential disaster ..

Thanks. Yeah, just cut out of 2x6 steel tubing. I figure I might as well add the insurance since I have so much custom routing of fuel and electrical. Something could go wrong and insurance would cover a fraction of what I've got in this truck.

I just make sure Kellyjohn is on the wheeling trip and I do not have to bring anything...:haha::haha::haha::haha:

Yeah, why even do maintenance, when SuperBurb can just pull you out? Even if SuperBurb happened to break (crawled over a Kryptonite boulder, for example), the Fargo would be right there...

Seriously, I didn't see it mentioned, but I like to bring some lengths of vacuum hose and some t-fittings and adapters to repair broken lines. Also some of every fluid the rig uses and a spare serpentine belt. I also like to have good maps and a GPS. Getting lost is almost as bad as breaking down sometimes. Or it can be the cause of breaking down or running out of gas.

A handgun might be a nice thing to have if your lost--and end up in
"da hood"..:eek1:..or at least a bat!..seems every time I go near Boston I end up in the worst area possible...I'd rather be lost or broke down in deep forest, than the concrete jungle any day..

Are you allowed to have them in MA? :D When I live in IA, you could have them but they had to be locked in the trunk, so not much use. I prefer it out here in the wild west. :thumb:
