What do you stand on to work on the engine?

I made a step stool (one of those kitchen ones that have a fold out step) into a version that I can "hang" over the tire..its better than the milk crate or 5 gallon pail sliding out and busting your nuts as already described!..but I rarely use in now, since I own a diesel and I dont have a distributor to strain to reach on that!..I also pull up alongside a concrete retaining wall in my driveway about 2' high made of huge blocks, that is sometimes TOO high though..I'm 6'5" tall,so reaching things isn't much problem--its my BACK that gets strained bending over that kills me!..

6'5" here so I use a Werner step stool as well when I need to really reach something but I hate how it tends to slide out when I lean over the fender...I've been left hanging by my belt buckle a few times this way. I like that folding scaffold thing but it looks like it might be just a bit too high for us big guys, I don't really need to reach the left side of the engine bay from the right fender :)

not the only one, I use the tailgate of my toyota truck backed up to the front bumper of my chevy, If I really need to get closer, I can stand between the tire and the frame, but it sucks if you need to come in and out of that position as I always seem to hit my head on something...

Ive used a roll around stool as a step before, just vise grip the tires and it stays planted for the most part...

no wheel wells. I stand on the leaf spring and tie-rod. sometimes on the ground straddling the axle tube.

Works great, until you slip climbing in/out and end up head first halfway down the engine bay, with one hand on pavement and one foot against the hood. That hurts by the way, a LOT. Getting out hurts more.
:haha: Sorry gotta laugh at this one as it has almost happened to me on several occasions

Cinderblock usually. Bout the right size for no more lift than my truck has. I'm 6'4" as well.

I try and climb in and sit on the radiator support but don't fit well. I hit my head on the hood latch constantly. I'd like to be able to rest it on the windshield like a jeep though

I used to stand on an old kitchen chair, till one day it kicked out and the hood latch got me in the stomach and then proceeded to drag along my chest.

Then I started climbing in and sitting on the radiator support with my feet on the frame rails. That works well for me usually, but I often would slip and fall while climbing in or out, especially if the truck was wet.

So, I then installed some old heavy duty brush guards on my Suburban and my Blazer. Now I climb on those to get up into the engine compartment... works well so far.

thay make stands to hang on tires. ment for big rigs. but good idea to try.
they work like a charm.:Di have one thanks to Supreme70.but i miss the days when i was putting JR together and there was no wheel tubs in the way.but Michigan means mud. so i need the damn things.i will say i have used every rigged way mentioned here though.

Holy Sh$t, that sounds painful and makes me cringe.... when your truck marks you like it's branding you...that it owns you for life.

I can picture it puncturing skin like a nice impaling.

When my father in law gave us our portion of land there was an old trailer house where we wanted our house. We sold the trailer and when they moved it they left the old metal steps to the back door. Well i bolted some 6 inch pneumatic casters on it and i just roll it over to the front of the truck

Yeah, it wasn't much fun. Luckily, it was only deep in a couple spots, rather than the whole length. The Suburban has got me a few times... I still have a 3 year old mark on my shin from slipping off the left rear rocker sill.

heres the reinforcment. works good.

all depends on what im doing, but usually i sit on the fender, basically in the engine bay. i also stand on my bumper when i need to. my bumpers made of 2x4 square stock tho

I've got an old Smittybilt 2-tube bumper guard on mine. The bottom tube has skateboard griptape on the top, so it's an easy "step up and stand" operation. Granted, the truck is not lifted and it's only on 31s, but I'm 5'8". I can't even reach the oil fill if I'm standing outside the truck on flat ground.

When my buddy had his '72 (4" lift with 35s) we would just drop the tailgate on mine and back it up to his front bumper.
