Just got a Dana 60 and 14 bolt ff, they came with 4.10's. Planning on running 35 inch tires with 6 inches of lift. Planning on wheeling but probrably a lot of highway driving. I have np241 and 700r4 in an 89 blazer. Wondering how 4.10' will be on the highway or if I need to change gears.

Mostly mud and sand a little rocks. Just want to make sure I have plenty of power and can cruise at 70 on the highway without cranking out too many rpm's

could do the 4.10 but will prob hunt 3rd-4th with 35" tires on highway. that will kill the 700r4 good n quick.

search a bit in the garage section this has been covered a lot of times.

some do it and run just 3rd gear max and fine on 4.10.

but basicly you want deep as yo can with the overdrive. but the doubler kit will add all you need offroad yes.

I currently run 35's with 4.56 gears (700/241 combo) and I sure wish i'd had gone with 5.13's. The slightest hill and the trans wants to hunt between 3-4 (not good) so I just slap it into 3rd until i've crested the hill. Sometime in the future i'm going to install some 5.13's.

from 4.10 to 4.56 you wont even realy feel it.

what ratio do you have now ?
what size tire do you have now ?

you need to read up on the pros and cons of each gear selection

I run 32" tires, 700/208 with 400sb, 3.73 gears. Runs 2000 RPM @ 75mph according to my GPS. Plug your numbers into the calculator and see what you want. My truck doesn't hunt for 4th, it stays in it ALL the time, even at 40mph. I have 4.56s going into my truck, they would work good for you. For me though, I wish I bought 4.88 or 5.13 with my INTENDED PURPOSE. (pulling trailers and offroading)

Building it now been in the process for a while. Stock 2.72 gears with stock 32's no lift. I liked the way it drove on the highway before but that gearing has got to go.

5.13's look good on the calculator but is the truck going to lose balls from takeoff?

going deeper will make it like a rocket ship on take off. say good bye to the rice burners.

65 mph thats 1300 rpm. in stock form.

sbc like to be in the min 1500 rpm range. but realy do good in the 1800-2200 rpm range. gets them in the power band.

but for now 4.10 and 35" tires you will be just under 1800 rpm. a lot better but on the edge of good sweet spot.

best i would say for now is bolt them in and run them. get a trans temp gauge kit and keep a eye on temps that kills the 700r4 also.

can install gears later if you need.

and if you got the rear axle from a true 1 ton truck you need to move the spring perches and shock tabs to match the 1/2 - 3/4 ton widths. easy job to do.

and if you want new spring perches and shock tabs with ubolts and top plates included all in 1 kit look here http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/14BSS.html good vendor and super fast ship times.

the front will bolt right in basicly. just swap the calipers from the 1/2 ton out to the ones on the 60 front and blead the brakes. hope you got the top plates for the springs also on the dana 60 diffrent than 1/2 ton. if not then easy same vendor i linked sells aftermarket set. just no sway bar hook up. if lift springs take it off anyways you wont need it. most everyone here has tossed that thing.

you have found the best site for these trucks and welcome.:thumb:

Axles came with everything on them thanks for the info and for the warm welcome. I want to get everything right before I put it back on the road so I would like to get my gearing right. From what I'm hearing 5'13's sound good. How about Detroit lockers in the Dana 60? Someone told me they were loud even when not engaged.

lots of guys run detroits here and love them.

if you want just about as good and few bucks cheeper and work fine for years even on 44" tires guys have run the lockright in the open diff and love them also in the front.

for the rear if you have a open diff then add a detroit its easy and just drops in the open diff.

front will need carrier swap from 4.10-down to 4.56-up ratio change. so might be better in the end to do detroit or even mabye a arb air locker for best of both worlds. open or full locked.
rear is easy as 4.10 down and 4.56-up but thay make thick gears for the rear to bolt on the 4.10 carrier and cheeper than thin gears and new carrier.

dont be afraid to ask here we all cool and friendly. :thumb: we would rather ask here than watch a guy screwup and waste cash.

i have an 89 blazer i had a 700r4 241 combo with 4.10 gears with 35's and i wasn't happy with it in the mud high range was just a little too high and on the highway it hunted alot between 3rd and 4th and burnt it up 3 times but my driving might have a little to do with that lol

Too early to suggest swapping in the manual trans? :flipoff2:

i second that...

i used to wheel 33's on a 350/turbo400/np203/d44/14bff/3.73's and open axles... rocked that and had fun wheeling.. never lost power wheeling in mud... take it out of OD... put it in 2 or 3... wheel it..

so im not keen on the 700r4.... :dunno:

but my current setup...
350/smc465/np205/d60-detroited/14bff-detroited-diskd/4:56's... i feel if i went with 5.13's without OD... id be hurtin @ 50mph!!!!!!!!!!!

but my main thing replying to is that i run true detroits front and back.. i like knowing it is locked.... now i dont do rocks.. i hear that on rocks they can be bad as they dont give at all..... funny to hear a detroit lock or unload whichever it is... i took off at a light one day.. slammed 3rd and BAAAAAAAANNNNGGGGG... rattled the entire frame... i was told that was the detroit re-engaging.. :haha:
