i bought a axle the other day and i was told its a dana 80 but all the 80's ive seen have a 10bolt diff cover and mine has a 12bolt cover, came out of a 2003 gmc van SRW. 70in wms-wms, fullfloat, 3 1/2in axle tubes. any ideas?

14 bolt or if its after the newer break its an AAM axle.

14-bolt is an AAM axle. AAM is just the old GM Corporate Axle Division that was spun off into a seperate company. The AAM 10.5" axle in my '03 is basically identical to the mid-80's 14-bolt in my K5. The only difference is the housing has some support ribs cast into it, spring perch and shock mounts, and it has factory disc brakes.

I know AAM is basically the new name for Corporate Axle but I was under the impression there were slight differences to the 10 and 14 bolts that make them non compatible. No?

I think that AAM make axles for dodge trucks too, I wonder if the change in name didnt have something to do with that.

lots of ford and gm vans with 8 lug are now running dana 60 rear axles in a semifloat use. i have seen a lot of these under box vans like penske / budget .

My '96 K1500 has an AAM label on the original front driveshaft.
There's also an 11.5" 14 bolt too.

I have nothing useful to add, but that's what I know about AAM. :D

Despite Dana belonging to dodge they now use AAM axles lol. And Dana still supplies fords axles. Idk where the logic is in that.

I don't know about that.
I know DANA is owned by SPICER or EATON, well all 3 are one company now, as for AAM it is indeed American Axle Manufacture, and Dodge started getting those axles when they split from GM.
There was even Talks abut them supplying possibly Ford, but for now Ford still get the Dana.
The OP axle question is it should be a 14bff or AAM axle, and it's not a D80.
And Ford vans do use D60's rear, and GM used them too a long time ago but not now, they use AAM axles or 14bff and there is a slight variation between the AAM and the 14bff but the gears are the same, I think pinion offset is the difference, I need to go back and check on that though.
But parts are interchangeable.

dana axle GM used them too a long time ago but not now, .

next time you get a chance look under the box vans from gm that are used by budget/penske rental. dana tag right on them. but 10+ years wrenchen my brain might have 1-2 wires crossed.

and if i get a chance i will snap a pic if i see one. :pimp:

Box vans, not a D60, maybe 70 or 80.
I was talking about the regular 1 ton vans.:D
Next time I will look and see.
Used to be they used an eaton axle on those, are you talking P30? or bigger?

Uhaul van truck thing, srw 70" WMS disc brakes and a 12 bolt cover with Dana 70hd guts and 35 spline shafts.

lots of jibberjabber with NO PICS

theres no way to mistake an D80. it has a giant 80 cast right into the housing. and the webs are huge.

D80 rear. 80 is on the side by the pinion. not the greatest pic, but 1st one I found of one of my old diffs.
