What kinda problem do i have?

Worse thing it could have done is put crud in your fuel tank that once plugged up the line.

updates and more troubles

hey guys, well here's my most rescent discovery while trying to get my truck running. I'll crank it over for about 10 seconds, hop out of the truck and stick my head next to the engine..... and i can hear fuel running through all the lines, bubbling and gurgling away. Any clues?

My guess is air in the lines... I'd trace all your fuel lines from front to back and be sure none of them are leaking, cracked or broken.

If you have a friend handy to help, wrap the end of the air line nozzle with a rag on the fuel neck. Should be enough to test it.

i think we got it.

well, after some disassembly of some of the fuel system today, i think i found the culprit. Like you guys had said, i think the LP went out because both filters only had a couple ounces in them. Soooooo, now i just have to get the new filters and lift pump. I'll keep you guys updated as things progress. Thank you everybody so much for your help, especially kenny.

When you go to bleed out the fuel system again I'd suggest getting a cheap electric fuel pump and bypassing your lift pump temporarily. You can then run it with the bleeder screw on your filters open until they fill up with no air left. Then hook the lift pump backup and do a final bleed.

Last time I bled a dual filter setup it took forever cranking it over :doah:

aux pump

what if i just spliced in a hand-ball pump inline with my fuel line? like on an outboard motor. Would this allow enough flow when the engine is running off the mechanical pump?

That I don't know about... but if you have one handy it would not hurt to try it and let us know :D

Update.....

well, i got new filters, new LP, installed them. then i bought a 7/16 inline diameter ball pump, and took another 5/8's fuel line w/fitting and cut it to about 4inches long. Then i pulled the 5/8s fitting off of the water seperator inlet, ran the ball pump inbetween the two fuel lines and pumped away. BUT...... after getting the system primed, and putting back together the stock fuel line setup (removing my ghetto fab. setup) i try and start the truck and still nothing. SO i remove all the glow plugs the rear two were covered in oil. And all the rest had a nice crusty white shell covering them except on the very tip. I cleaned all that up. With the GP out, i cranked the engine over for a couple seconds to check for fuel vapor...... I ONLY HAVE FUEL GOING TO THE PASSENGER SIDE OF THE ENGINE! Now i reinstall the GP. Pull the injection lines off the injectors of the drivers side, go back in the truck and give it a couple cranks. No fuel is coming out of the injection lines...........

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM HERE???

Sounds like you're seeing either clogged or kinked injector feed lines, or a dying injector pump. I can't think of any other reason you'd only get fuel to one side of the motor...

agreed

Yeah, it's been bugging the heck out of me because i can't get my hands on any information that relates to this problem. What i'm assuming though is that there is a clog, just need some help on how to get rid of a clog safely. I want to try and shoot a little bit of air up each the lines, but i don't want to ruin the diaphram in the IP. I've already tried hooking up my ball pump to the empty injector lines and trying to pull the fuel down but that didn't have any affect.Anyways, i'm up for suggestions.

Thinking about it some more, it's gotta be a kinked line somewhere, or the IP is dying. The IP puts out enough pressure (over 1000 psi IIRC...) to push anything solid in the lines all the way to the injectors, so I personally don't think it's a clogged line.
Don't know what to tell you now... maybe one of the other diesel gurus will chime in come Monday.

Ip

Man, every time somebody utters "your IP is probably going out" i get nervous, because, well..... it's expensive, and complicated. So i'll just cross my fingers for now and hope it's still an easy fix. I'm on a nickel rubbing budget here, right now i'm out of work and i'm young so there aren't alot of places that pay descent for somebody like me, and i insist on doing the work myself because..... i can't afford a mechanic and i do the work just fine on my own. I wanna say thanks again to you guys for letting me pick at your brain and for you helping me out.

Yay

Welp guys, with a little bit of tinkering today i got my truck running again. So i'de once agian like to gratefully thank all of you for your help and input, you guys helped make this happen and i appreciate it very much. take care.
AJ   :D

welp.....

I stayed up all night last night laying in bed thinking of every problem that could be goin on..... then i read details on how an IP works in detail and figured to just hook up the fuel lines tight again after finding out that the IP only shoot a couple drops per cylinder per revolution. Correcting my idea of it holding a constant pressure stream on the inector line itself. So i just primed the fuel system with some good pressure and cranked her over for another minute or so and it just fired up. It ran really, really smooth for the first time in a long time. So i aired the tires back up and went driving. Got on the freeway a mile from home and it started dying on me again. WELLLLLLLLLL, i tried to take a short cut using old fuel line for the small rubber line going from the LP up to the filter...(i think thats where it runs)....... but anyways, when i hit the freeway that old line couldn't handle the pressure and burst on me, thus i lost all fuel pressure again. SO i have the new line and i'm gonna replace it in the morning. So i'll let you know how it goes from there.

Sob!!!!

well, today i replaced the fuel hose from the LP to the secondary filter because it burst on me yesterday on it's test run. I get it started again tonight and it's running fine then it gets a light lope but it's still idling close to normal then it just shuts off instantly. BUT NOW i can't get it to start again because both bolts that hold the selenoid on the starter shook loose and fell out somewhere and now the truck wont turn over at all again! so now i'm back at ground zero and i'm all sorts of pissed off. I think it's time for the 28mt gear-reduction starter since this is the 6th bosch starter i've been through in a year and a half. anyways, your guy's input would be much appreciated once again. thanks.
AJ

we must be related!

Your luck and mine run the same it seems!...one thing to remember--diesels and vibration go hand in hand--Locktite is your friend!..I'd just put 2 new bolts in the solenoid with some Locktite or lockwashers and see if it starts ok again...I've lost those bolts on my 72 K5 with a 350 gas motor once far from home on vacation!--I swiped the bolts out of my licence plate in order to get it started again, and wired the plate on with a coathanger!..

haha

Yeah, my luck has been in the gutter for some time now with this truck. I've shackin' so many bolt loose and off i can't even count em' anymore.
