It is a 98 k1500 whith out the heavy chassis equip. package.
Thanks in advance

Ugh no there isnt. On the old style theres two different sized ring gears and at some point a different company started making them for the newer models.

You are wrong. There are two different ring gear sizes on 14 bolt axles. There is a 14 semi floater which uses 9.5" ring gear and then there's the 14FF which uses a 10.5" ring gear.

The 2 different size rings gears were the difference between the s-10 and fullsize 10 bolts. All GM trucks with 10 bolts had the 8.5" ring gear.

The GM tech above you is in the know:deal:

It would be the standard 30 spline 8.5" ring gear 10 bolt. The "old style" was still 8.5" ring gear but had 27 spline axles.

The old style 8.5 had 28 spline not 27. Many cars had 8.5 10 bolts aswell with the 28 spline. A good upgrade for the car is to buy the carrier from a 30 spline truck and run 30 spline aftermarket axles.

It is rumored that the 30 spline 10 bolt is weaker in the carrier department since all GM did was bore the carrier larger to accept the larger axles which weakens the carrier at that point.

s10 10b's do come in two different sizes. 7.5 and 7.625. though, everything including the R&P is interchangeable between the two. there is also a spline difference of 26 vs 28 spline, that as far as i can tell have something to do with era. the 8.5 30 spline 10b can also be found in some s10's.

That could be. I think people have more problems with axles than carriers, hence the swap. I know some will spend the bucks for the aftermarket carrier which is much stronger i believe, may be for this reason. Looks like they also upsize the bearings also.

See I wasnt sure if the two sizes for the 10bolt were both fullsizes or the fullsize vs the s10 versions. What was I reading the other day about some outsourced company making the 10b for the newer trucks? Bueller?

There are certainly two different housings, that much I am 100% sure of.

I'll go check randy's, believe the new ones are 8.6".

Ok, done. All you have to do is type in GM 10 bolt in yahoo and find that 8.6 is the new size.

If you look it up the 8.6 uses the same ring gear/axle size as the 8.5.

The 8.6 R&P are interchangeable with the 8.5 too.

My 88 K5 rear had an 8.6 rear, 8.5 front and 28 spline axle shafts. So there are some odd ball ones out there. When I regeared I used an 8.5in R&P in place of the 8.6.

But they are a different ring gear size.

Housings changed, I was unclear what else, if anything changed, but apparently just the housing and the ring/pinion. Not surprising its the same as the 7.5/7.625.
