What's the cheapest you have drove a K5 home for?

My dad was on his way camping and the 454 developed a knock, he had me come get it..... 2 weeks later it was my birthday and when I opened up my card, the pink slip fell out.. I nearly S**t my pants!!

Not near some of the scores above. But my 88 Tbi/465/208 drove the next day for $350. It needed a starter and the 465 shifter rearranged due to the impact. No nothing vinyl seats manual window truck. After a front clip repair it will drive on the road.

Mine is like free now. I bought it brand new 23yrs ago. It's been apart for 14yrs. I got it out off the back of the shop this year and started putting it back together.

Just drove a CUCV home for $650. Could have been $625, but I felt guilty and wrote the check for $650.

I paid $850 for my trail rig. Fixed some wiring problems, spent another 8-900 on some 35" tires. Cut the front fenders and less than a month after buying it, drove it over 200 miles to the badlands offroad park. Wheeled it and drove it all the way back.

Back 20 years or more ago,it was not hard to find a driveable 4x4 for cheap money here--long as you dont mind some rot & rust..

I bought the '71 K5 CST for 300 bucks in 1986..all original unmolested truck,SM465 too,original 350 2 bbl..

The '71 K1500 (with a Fisher plow) for 500,in 1987..

I paid 150 bucks for the '75 2WD K5...drove it 75 miles home ..

My current daily driver, the '82 GMC K2500,I got for 350 bucks ,but I had to get it towed home..would have driven it if it had plates and did a little prep work the 60 mile ride home though..

The 77 GMC K2500 I got in 1994 with a 454 for 500 bucks..

The 74 C1500 GMC 454 I got for 500 bucks also..

Had a '79 C-10 Bonanza I got for 500 bucks too--bought it from the same guy I got the '82 GMC from...

The '85 K10 Suburban I bought in '09 but never put on the road yet,I got for 400 bucks,6.2 with a ailing 700R4...(no pictures of that one yet)..

I bought my '81 G-10 van for 500 bucks back in 1990,was still in very decent shape then being only 11 years old, with 130K on it...250 six TH350 with a lock up converter..."blown" tranny turned out to be a stripped plastic govenor gear,it wouldn't shift out of first gear, that didn't stop me from driving it home 12 miles on back roads though!..was probably my most enjoyable "long trip" vehicle,I drove it to TN,once, and NY,NH,and ME several times ,never got stranded in it..

My best buy was the '69 GTO I got from a friend for 150 bucks and a '67 Impala I traded towards it I had only 100 bucks into..

73 paid $400.

ran and drove when i picked it up, i did a little a work to it and drove it to fla. from washington state and back, it had a freshly rebuilt 350 when i bought it.

the way it looks now

In 2012 I got a phone call from a buddy of mine who had a '91 K5. He told me that his rep payee(he lives on state disability) found out that he had two vehicles and not allowed to own more than one he had to get rid of one vehicle in order to get paid the next month. Since his Toyota Tercel was more fuel efficient than the K5, the K5 had to go. So he asked me how much money I had on me and I said one dollar, he said sold. A half hour later I bought that K5 for one dollar. It was my daily driver for almost a year then I sold it for two grand.

I paid $1 for my K10, and it drove home (although the 700R4 had lost 4th gear). Condition when I bought it:

And, yes, much to Martin's chagrin, I am still using the original rusty wheels.

At least paint them and put GM center caps on them. You only have to drill and tap 3 holes per wheel.

Drove it home free from a neighbor 9 years ago, 1980 with a 305 th400/205 Everything worked kinda! :D

Still got it! What it looks like now.

The only thing left from the original truck is the frame and the transmission cross member! :haha:

My only 6-lug Chevy center caps are from a 1999ish cargo van. I've held them up to those rims, and they just aren't any improvement, IMO.

I am planning to retire those rims when that set of rubber wears out, anyway (and the fronts are going to be swapped out before I do my next long trip). I have the cargo van rims ready to go. And you're still wanting me to try the CUCV rims, yes? I think if I had a set of period-appropriate dog-dish center caps I would run that combination. I'd look like Deuling in white rims...

But I don't. So unless someone is willing to part with a set, I'm likely to just throw the cargo van rims on and call it good. Not the end of the world to have ugly rims... :dunno:

Those are CUCV wheels. The center caps shouldn't be too hard to find.

That's what I thought. But if you already have CUCV wheels, why are you wanting another set? Just for the fun of collecting them? Or for one of the other trucks? :dunno:

I traded some boat parts for mine and been driving it for a couple of years now.

Both. I have a lot of trucks.
