whats your daily driver

20160420_173424.jpg When I got my first bicycle, I got a set a wrenches because those were the tools I needed to fix it. I still have the wrenches and use them on car nuts and bolts, and Now that I own modern computer controlled vehicles, I have the tools needed to repair that aspect. A laptop and an Internet connection. You can buy software, an OBDII cable and a laptop all in for under $500. You can buy an app for your phone and a Bluetooth OBDII connector and do most everything the average driveway guy needs.

My Navigator was doing a couple wierd things. (Head lights flickering, power tailgate not working right, auto door locks locking at the wrong time.) A few Google searches, taking some things apart and inspections of some things and two butt connectors fixed it. It was really Google and some guy in Connecticut having the same problem with his Expedition who posted about it on a forum that diagnosed the problem. A splice that gets corroded and fails

I also bought both factory service manuals, and the factory wiring diagrams on CD ROM for this truck off ebay for $13.

The first time you encountered a Torx, or an Allen head did you throw your hands up and say it was too complicated to fix? No, you went to the store and bought the tools to do the job. Newer cars need newer tools. Electronics are not going away. Living in the rust belt daily driving old iron is a loosing battle, and can be quite expensive.

When you need a good job to afford the car that takes you to your job...something is broken with this picture. :doah:
that mileage and car payment, gas, maintenance better be paying me over 80k to afford it!

yeah well I am doing this for that specific reason... I call it the money train! Riding it till it stops... and with bonus, 401k, loyal employee 401k match (never had this before) and salary your not even close to what I make... just sayin... but actually I dont see any of it. The wife gets paid well!!!!!

Think Tundras and Chevy 4X4's cost around 45k and up how can people afford it?

my Z92 was a $9k optioon pack..
truck total was $52k

so another math lesson all..

I love my GMs for this reason..

$4k off for navy federal credit union member
$16.8k trade in ( owed $8,500)
+ $1k extra trade in since i was trading a GM in ( Silverado)
+ $1.5k extra since I had another GM in my driveway (both Scottsdale and Trailblazer EXT)
other extra current deals that were going on...

took truck from $52k to $33k which I got 2.92% for 6 years @ 499/m - so it actually is affordable as I know people paying $600 - $850/m for a car payment...

now kicker.. when we got to the dealership I said... I want to look at the truck and I am not going to buy it. I said I was going to buy the wife a jeep wrangler unlimited sahara and had the paperwork (we always go to the dealership with the vin of the vehicle we want to see as sometimes they dont know they even have it!!!!). I said if you are at the right hand seat of GOD and can make miracles work we will see... well miracles happened and the entire time wife was like... ITS MY TURN!!!! but she loves the truck...

Debt. Serious serious debt. "equity" in ones home. Its how our economy took a gigantic shit a few years ago. Spend more than you can afford and let everyone else take the hit.

Massive payments also.

Hell a base tahoe is like 62k now! insanity at the highest of levels. Theres no possible way its worth that. Same thing with diesel prices.

yeah debt it is... and I wasnt in much of it.. still not too bad.

funny thing is not just cars but even cell phones! I know people that have to have the latest and greatest when it comes out.
Co worker bought an iphone 6 when it came out. Paid $900 out of pocket to not have a contract. Then next month his wife wanted a new phone so he gave her his and he bought the 6 plus for $1200 !!!!! that is insane..

I dont mind contracts as I have been with sprint since it was nextel and funny when the sales people look at my contract and see that. They are like... umm wow loyal customer of more than 20 years!!!!!!!!!!

you have to know how to work the system on this stuff...

my wife turned her iphone 5s in (mint condition as it was in a lifeproof case) and got $175 for it. her 64gb 6s plus cost us $100 out of pocket. my note 3 I got for $250... notice I said note 3... im still using it and waiting for the note 6. Used my upgrade for my son's phone galaxy 6s - $99 ....

best yet though was bought a stove from lowes - they price matched another store plus we opened a card... got a $2800 stove for $1400... and we went and paid it off even though 0% for 12 months...

Just to clarify, I'm not knocking you or Martin for any of your purchases, I'm knocking the senseless masses that don't do their math BEFORE walking into dealerships and get talked into biting off way too much debt to pay for things they don't really need. A well thought-out vehicle purchase can be a whole lot less ridiculous than the average consumer falling for the newest shiny car/gadget/whatever. And not just new cars, used car buyers are often foolish as well.

I just wish such careful thinking was mainstream.

^^^ i know you werent pointing to me... im just vouching to myself:smokin2:

sorry to take this thread in different directions gonna start a new thread for something...
but i hear ya... and yes right now my wife is super stressed.... as we just put $11k in cabinets on new kitchen cabinets... $2800 on granite... $3500 on hardwood floors plus redo powder room and kids bathroom. Think were in it for $22k. My $7k bonus went towards cabinets, floor/granite paid cash but think were still in the CC for $8k-ish...
