i want to add overdrive to the crew cab. this truck is turning into a complete teardown project to get what i want. currently its stock.
tbi 350/465/ 3.73s
what im converting to is
tbi 383/?/5.13s with 38s

it will be used as a dd/tow vehicle

optins are, but not limited to

nv4500
ranger o/d
gear vender o/d

least amount of mods to the vehicle = gear vender
lowest initial cost = ranger
highest initial cost = gear vendor
cant keep my front bench seat = ranger
slip yoke rear driveshaft = gear vendor
floor mods required = ranger/nv4500
split every gear with a switch = gear vendor

they all have thier issues. but im looking for more pros or cons
other stuff to consider
truck needs a clutch as it is
bellhousing is cracked
i dont mind modding the floor. been there
more shifter are cool
i already have a hydro clutch

I would go with something that is factory GM stuff (NV4500 if you stick with a manual or 700R4 or 4L80E if you go auto). If you go with a gear vendors you CANNOT use it in 4wd (if you ever had a need to do so, wouldn't know why but hey stranger things have happened). :D

i realize it cant be used in 4wd. but im sure its alot easier to split all the gears with a switch instead of a second shifter.

i did find a brand new (not reman) nv4500 for $1400 on ebay.

I say go with a divorced 205 and a gear vendor :D 16 forward gears and 4 reverse :eek1: and then you could use it with 4wd

NV4500 for only one unit simplicity.

Ranger for using what you have now simplicity.

Having read about this sorta thing for a good while now I wouldn't touch a GV with a 10' pole. Great for muscle cars and street vehicles. Not so great for those of us with trucks we use. I forget who but several years ago someone on here laid out the "large 4x4 user's reasons for not owning a Gear Vendor" and the list was persuasive.

Personally if I were starting from scratch I'd probably go with the NV4500 swap just so I only had one transmission and one transfer case to worry about. That said wtf do I know?

i really was leaning towards the ranger. but after some suggestion, and more consideration, maybe the 4500 is the way to go.
if i can sell my car tomorrow, i might buy that n.o.s. nv on ebay. $1400. its new. no stinkin core charge. i already have a long 32spline 205. combined with the AA spacer, and bellhousing, might cost less than 2k to do.

EDIT- that trans is for a dodge. found the bellhousing for $329
found the 205-32spl. long adapter for $90
a reman or new trans between $1500-$1800

EDIT AGAIN- thats really goin to take a toll on my budget:doah:
i still need paint, gears, and tires, and a shed to keep all my extra stuff in. ( i have the tires, but they are on the k5. so the k5 will get new tires)

Read up on the threads where a 4500 swap was done..... IIRC tRusty and BP71K5 have both documented the swap.

Neither one of them got out of it was cheaply as they first predicted.... buyer beware.
