Who has a living 700R4?

I'm aware of that. I could send you the 32 spline gear from my 208 if it fits a 241.

Thinking when I go to my S10 project I will put in a 700R4 with a 241. Anyway who has one that hasn't given them trouble? Has had personal trouble with one? I don't mean your buddy killed one after 1000 miles on a crappy rebuild or 100,000 miles on the factory one. WHat has happened to you? I'm thinking about reading nad learning and rebuilding one with upgraded parts, myself.

I personally know a guy who offers I believe a 37K 37month (better than a GM build, which will give you the same crappy sun gear, etc)
It's an independent shop called "No Bull Trans". He stands behind his [censored], it isn't just a paper warranty. If your on the other side of the US and have a tranny shop fix his tranny, he will foot the bill.
He knows his [censored], and when my TH700R4 eventually dies, I will mail it too him.
Just make sure to put on THE LARGEST after-market cooler that you can fit & or afford on there, BYPASSING the P.O.S OEM "cooler" (more like "heater-uper-distroy-your-tranny-as-fast-as-possible-even-if-you-drive-like-gradma-thingy") /forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif

As for the TH400, you need to rebuild it right to get long life out of it. There are allot of internal design issues to cope with.

I may be the only person on the planet... but I have a Raptor 700 and its never let me down. I have a big cooler (not even stacked plate, yet) and run 35s sometimes and 39.5s others. Never had a problem.

241s in general are hard to find, although there was one in indy for a 700R4 for $100.

Had one in my '86 Trans Am that was a POS. Probably was a result of GM putting a 2.08 gear /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif /forums/images/graemlins/eek.gif in the rear of a heavy-ass car, with a decent motor for it's time (TPI 305) that ran hot by design (that ratio's not a mis-type either - I verified when changing the gear oil...)

Have one in my '87 K5. Hasn't given me a problem since October '99 when I bought the truck. Of course, the truck's now falling to pieces around the tranny... /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif /forums/images/graemlins/angryfire.gif

First 700 died after a fluid change (got about 70% across country before it let go) and the rebuild, by Aamco of all places, lasted about 5 years until I sold the truck.

Of course, I had added a trans cooler, was running 31" tires with 3.08's, and kept it out of overdrive except when the vehicle could use it, and had no problems with it.

Guy I sold it to toasted it immediately after I sold it to him, since he beat it regularly, and went with quite a bit bigger tires. I warned him. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Had mine rebuilt by a local shop that specializes in them. So far so good. The owner of the shop runs one behind a stroker and some big azzz Mickey T's in a little 2wd shortbed, so I think he's got his stuff together. We'll see....

We've owned quite a few and have only had one problem, a pump failure. Other than that, I've never had a problem with one. SOme of them were in stock vehicles and others were in lifted..

I finally am bitting the bullet and going the th400/205 route. I lose a little gear and overdrive but I have put 3 700's in my rig since I have had it and I feel no matter what I will always be worried about the trans. If I had a smaller truck, 35's or smaller, and good gears I wouldnt be afraid to have a 700, but with 38's and possibly 42's I say forget that damn thing. As of about 4 months ago I believed in my 700's but after this one is on its way out and I toasted another in my camaro I figured the hell with it. I run good gears, a huge cooler, and have had the trans done by a very good shop with all the goodies in it and still I can see it not lasting very long. I dont want to drive my truck out to a trail thats 200 plus miles away and be stuck there because I wanted a little better first gear. I am finding that I drive my truck much less than I used to on a daily basis, so its ok. But if you want extreme durability, uncomprising strength, and the ability to not worry about your tranny go with a 465, or if your an auto man the venerable th400. Hey just a quick thought that I have been pondering for a while, has anyone thought about trying to put in a new allison? I know the 4l80 route, but it seems a allison would be wicked cool. /forums/images/graemlins/peace.gif

[/ QUOTE ] I think it would be hard to put a computerized one in from the new chevys but a full mechanical one would probably work if there was an adapter for the bellhousing.

I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a "mechanical" Allison 1000. If it's being used behind a mechanical motor, I believe there's a stand-alone computer for it.
If I remember, I'll ask the guys on our Allison line at work about it.

Maybe all the new models. All the older models were mechanical. I have driven 3 different vehicles with allisons that had no computer.

Ahhh... I didn't know the A1000 was around before the computerized days. I know there's plenty of other mech Allison autos; there's probably half-a-dozen of them on our Allison line currently... including one that looks like a 55gal drum with a yoke at one end and a bellhousing on the other.

Sorry, I wasn't necessarely talking about the 1000 series. I have no idea what model they were that I have seen and driven but I know they werent computerized. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

yeah... that, a 502 Ram-jet, Rockwells, 49s.... Its just that whole Money thing keeps getting in the way /forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

We had Allison tranny's in the school busses I worked on in school--most had 637 V8's,but a few had the 366/427 tall deck motors--but back then I didnt have a licence,a 4x4 so I never really looked at them that close--they must have a bellhousing or adapter that bolted to the big block motors.Maybe time to look closer at the busses in the junkyards, huh?. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

Most of the ones I've seen are behind diesels but I have seen 1 behind a ford small block and chevy v6.

I am on 700R4 #6.

I would never have another 700R4 in my truck if it wasnt built by Bowtie Overdrives, GM, or a shop that offers a GOOD long warranty. You have to get it from a shop that knows there stuff and stands behind there work. Otherwise forget it.

Harley

P.S. The next tranny to go into my truck will be a SM465 (it is already in my garage) because I can't afford another 700R4. Later on when I can afford it I will get a 4L80E.

is the 4L80e that much better than the 700r4. i have one and was thinking of putting it in(with the LS1sitting in front of it of course lol)
