i have a pair and there both FROZEN on the pull knob for the free spool . any good tricks to get it free ? new is CRAZY money these days and rather not if i dont have to .

also both mine are the older original units with weaker electric motors and i figure why not upgrade to the newer units motor and gear . unless you know of a better options without going over board .

do the CLUTCH units with the spring and balls need lots of attention or just run it ? i see reman kits cost around $120.00 .

thanks for any help / links you can provide .

anyone know how far back you could tilt a warn 8274 winch in mounting it ?

application i am trying to install one requires a top open cable discharge BUT the cable will always be at this angle . cant come back at the electric motor and solenoid pack .

just want to make sure oil flow and other items wont be effected . custom mount is the easy part if you can mount it at an angle .

My first tow truck was a homemade 220 clone. I installed an 8274 like normal with feet facing towards the rear of the truck. Cable went straight up to a pulley then back to the boom. That truck was used everyday for 5 years without even changing a solenoid. If I remember correctly I had to rotate the solenoid pack back and lengthen one of the 3 cables to get it out of harms way.
The line speed was so fast it would almost jerk small cars off the ground so I added a snatch block at the sling to slow down the line speed and as an added bonus put half the load on the boom.

exactly what i have planned . picking up a 440 thursday and going to convert it to a 220 as there the same just electric or mech pto power winch .

well i dug out the 2 winches tonight and BLEW them apart and found a LOT of what i didn't want . . . :confused1::eek2::frown(n)

need a pair of motors or at least 1 .
1 new spline gear .
2 main drum gears for HEAVY rust on a few teeth i wouldn't trust under load .
1 top gears and 1 cross gear the upper is clipped on to . cleaned up 1 and wasn't that bad on the top big gear .
1 cross gear shaft and bearing kits .
2 free wheel knobs if i cant free up these ones . slow and steady and little work i got them all cleaned out and smooth as new . BE CAREFUL the spring and ball pop out easy .
2 lower drum bushing and seal kits .
2 motor bearings in the upper case .
possible master rebuild kit for the clutch brake on 1 and should have a seal on each one .

at this point i might have more in taking 2 to make 1 plus new / used parts just to get 1 decent winch . . . then there still not designed for top load cable in/out the wrecker unit will need . and then i need to relocate the solenoid pack and prob just get a new one .

i think its a cut my losses and part them out or sell as a WHOLE package deal bundle . . . keep a eye open in the classified section they might be in there soon .

the problem @Capt Ron is thats WAYYYYY to far away to make it worth my time / cost with shipping . even if i had the 1 winch removed and the holmes cable upper head pulled and ship just them 2 . unless you wana make me a smoking deal on them . even strip off the cable as i have new and save shipping weight .

funny you post up the RAMSEY RE-8000 winch as i have been looking for a good winch local and this would be my GO TO MODEL / BRAND is the RE-series . yes there a little slow but they will pull all day long . guy 3hr north of me has one in a 12,000 LB spec and he wont return messages on FB market place . i even sent him a pic of the cash ready to buy it .

@Capt Ron you wana part out ? ? ? let me know please .

not having much luck here . about to go buy a WHOLE truck just for the winch . but bonus is its a c3500HD truck :sneaky:

I had an 8274 about 20 years ago and regret selling it. Just in to see where you go with it.
