i have a sm465 in my 86 k5, after 210,000 miles and 3 people learning how to drive on it, and plenty of soft core wheeling with daily driving the thing still pees out amber colored fluid when i change it every 60k. my 90 suburban had the 700r4 rebuilt at 165,000 with a shift kit and it didnt even get 30k on it with daily driving and mild off roading before the tranny started slipping.

manual is the way to go for reliablity, low range, and overall fun :D

I've got a 465 in the 4x4 and have done a little trail riding along with a lot of deep snow driving(translation; I was pulling people out of ditches and snow banks:rolleyes:). Wouldnt trade it for nothin'. Even put one in the wife's Burb for towing. Needs overdrive, but otherwise good driving.

Manual all the way

I run 44 boggers and 4.10's on my K5. I went through 4 complete drivetrain conversions in a period of 6 months.
i ran a
700R4/208, fried it,switched to
T400/208, Snapped the case after 4hrs of moderate wheeling, switched to
T350/203, snapped that case about 3 hrs in.

So I said to hell with autos, converted to a 465/205 combo. best thing I ever did,
There is no lower gearing then that. I can spin my 44 boggers in deep mud in 3rd gear. It will crawl too, I can get out of the truck while crawling through some nasty and walk slow beside it. Sometimes I even wait for it at the end:D

I hav two wheelers with 465/205 combos, both have manual linkage. Ive had nothing but problems with the smaller of the two, 6"springs/35"boggers,the linkage always pops off the ball on the trans when it flexes.

However, My K5 will tuck tires and Ive never had ANY issue with the linkage.

465/205's are a great combo. I swapped them into my first 76 blazer i had and sold the 350/203. Recently bought my new 76 which is a factory 465/205 truck. The big thing with that combo though is you need to pay attention to motor and t-case mounts. The t-case adapter will crack and even break in half from the twisting if the motor mounts go bad, ask me how i know.

HOLY **** !!!! man I've never seen the cast iron adapter break like that!

i have a 465/208 combo the only thing i would change would be the t-case to something stronger like a 205 with a good low range ratio

...which kind of eliminates the 205 then...unless you run a doubler or poney up for 3:1 gears...

my cousin broke one like that this weekend. he was going backwards up a hill. but i'm sure the wore out engine mounts had nothing to do with it.:doah:

How often do you see people rant about broken 208's? Not too often...

haha well I have I've broke every one I've ever had ( which is only 3 so maybe its me)

alot of my buddies have broke them too every thing from case failures to chain slip to that goofy thrust washer that makes you lose high range

I've seen and heard of them breaking...but it was always either too much engine, too much tire, no skid plate, lack of maintenance, etc. Seems like I've seen them last forever on trucks that were either treated right, maintained correctly, and/or setup right.

I've also seen 205's broken and worn out.

Really!? I've got two out in the shed that are broken like that.

I've broken a 208. Before the chain let go on the highway, I was having problems with it poping out of 4hi. When it went, it didn't end well, the only thing holding the t-case in the truck was the front driveshaft.
