thats crazy I've never seen that breakage and I put some serious power through mine and 44" swampers My trans and t-case have 300,000 on them and the only thing I've broke is that 10-spline sleeve ( I carry a spare in the glovebox now)

How often do you see people rant about broken 208's? Not too often...
i just broke one about a month ago i wasnt even wheeling i was driving home from work drifting the corners on my road and launched the chain out the side of the case.............and no the hubs wernt locked and i was in 2-hi

it was a little wierd it started making a clicking noise and then went bang. it still drove so i drove it the last 1/2 mile home

i love my manual. i have a vortec 350/465/205/205 w/ 4.10s and i have no need for lower axle gears. they are great. and surprisingly can be wound out pretty far on the road. the only complaint is the synchros can go in the 2nd/3rd gear depending on how u count gears.

I had a 465/208...and it kept jumping out of 4 hi then wouldnt go in low...Then after that the trans jumped out of reverse, i had to hold it in. (it was good until the 38s and 456 gears).... so ive changed it to 465/205 and so far so good...No complaints except the letting the clutch out a lil to get in low ( granny gear).....but ive heard that b4 and is no biggie to me... I like wheelin with the manual but i have my lazy days and use the other truck with th400 and 208....that works good..

I never had a manual rig for a wheeler until now and lemme tell ya, the night before my shakedown run, I was panicking! I thought to myself, what if I hate wheeling a manual and stall out all the time, what am I gonna do? (I bought the rig specifically for the manual tranny and had no desire to swap in an auto woulda sold it had I not liked wheeling it). Well, I discovered I really like wheeling a manual! I stalled only once on the run and had great control and a lot of fun! Now granted, I do have a doubler and 4.56 gears so, crawl ratio is almost 120:1 with the sm 465's first gear. I really like that added control of the LOW gearing!

HOLY **** !!!! man I've never seen the cast iron adapter break like that!

that looks so familiar! lol

broke my first one in the exact sme place! :doah::crazy:

granny first with 6.72 gears. works nice even with 49s

fixed it by fabbing a side mount on the transfer case housing where the two bolt holes are for the tabilizer bar that came on some models.

mine was alredy tapped and readt to rock.

now dont hafta worry. just point and shoot!

I have wheeled 3,4, and 5 speeds. Currently, my rig of choice has an automatic. My leg muscles aren't as strong as they used to be. I agree that a manual requires much more finesse on rocks, and off camber stuff.

my 86 K30 has a 400/205... it's nice and strong for what i do now, but when i replace the 350 with a 6.2 or 6.5, i'm going 465-203/205... that's all i've wanted since before i bought this truck...

my brother wheels an '80 Dodge Crew Cab with a 435 and (now) divorced & twin sticked 205... that sucker is nice for climbing hills and through our long bog...!

wheeling a 4 speed

I run a 465,moderate big block,lockers,14bff,dana 60 and 44 boggers.I mostly run deep mud and old logging roads.Wouldn't have anything else, considering the mass, weight, load, etc. The only big problem I've had is not the tranny,it's the D60.I am running yukon 35 spline axles and warn premium lockers. No problem with lockers failing, but have snapped 3 of these GREAT 35 Spline Yukons. For the price of parts,I think a D44 with good parts would be a better choice. But back to the tranny,it's all in choice.Oh yeah, this is no trailer queen, driven most everyday on the highway. That's how we roll in Alabama.

pics man, pics.

maybe I missed it somewhere but what about the NV4500 ? I love manual always wanted a suburban and looks like I might get one this week but I sure would prefer a manual trannie. Thats all I've ever had in my yotoas. YOU CAN't roll start a auto when your kid leaves the interior light on and the batteries dead in the morning...LOL

I didnt read the whole thread but I have wheeled a manual more than an auto.

I have swapped to a SM465 in 3 trucks the rest already had them and my 97 is a 5 speed.

Yeah, the wife has stick issues.

Mine too........

I have an auto because we go camping and such with the kids. If something happens to me (broken leg) in the middle of nowhere I want her to be able to get the family out.

That being said I really want to do a Cummins 12 valve 6 spd swap real real bad.

She's so damn sensitive about it I think if I ever swap a transmission on Big Ugly it will be to an auto OD transmission instead of a SM465 + OD box or NV4500 sadly.

but w/ the 465 you need the OD box rt? my buddy was just talkin about a allison 8spd but I've never seen one. then again he is a caterpillar mech,

i've got a '77-84 GM truck delaership parts manual, and it states 4 different manual transissions... what was the 'code' for an SM465...? one in particular stated it had Low 1st, then 1, 2, 3... what model transission would that be...? i can take a picture if the pages if anyone's interested...
