I got a 465/WMS-203/205 in mine. Manuals are way cool but IMHO they need the extra gear to get the full bennefit.

i've got a '77-84 GM truck delaership parts manual, and it states 4 different manual transissions... what was the 'code' for an SM465...? one in particular stated it had Low 1st, then 1, 2, 3... what model transission would that be...? i can take a picture if the pages if anyone's interested...

and i bet the 4 different models would be the different output shafts.

There was a true 3 speed manual that was column shifted in those years. Then there was the 4 speed OD A-833, then the most common, the SM 465. What the fourth one would be I don't know.

I off roaded my toyota with a 5 spd quite a bit, and enjoyed every second of it. I am now looking for a k5/pickup to wheel with an sm465, i prefer stick, its more fun.

Seen lots of them. Just wondering if that was the other option as I don't think the column shift 3 speed or the OD Mopar transmission were put in the 4x4's.

i was also wondering about that... cuz i know GM cars were '4 speeds', and i thought the trucks would be the same... i didn't know that they would have a low-first, then 1-2-3... i know my brother's NP435 is a '4 speed' then a granny gear...

Nope, NP435 and the SM420/465 are both "4 speeds". L1, 1, 2, and 3rd. If he's got a NP435 with more than four gears (not counting reverse - it never counts) then go sell it on Craigslist or Ebay as a rare part.

I have been driving manual since i was six and wouldn't trade for an auto. No tranny cooler to worry about, and you are in complete control of the vehicle. But, any mistakes, and its your falut

I had a t350/203 in the burb when I first started beating it on the trails . It lasted 2 trips and died . Went to the sm465/205 with the hydro clutch set up and Have never had any issues . The low gear is awsome for steep rocky muddy hills weather it's going up or down .

so i found an '81 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive truck with a stick in it... can i make the trans work in my '86 and hook a doubler to it...? or would the truck be just good enough to grab pedals and parts from...?

at minimum... pedal and parts (unless going hydro)
2wd trans is good if you want a divorced t-case setup... to get driveshaft angles better..... but you wont be able to mate a 2wd trans to a t-case for a doubler (i dont think)

Another 465/205 user and fan here. Swapped out the old 350/203 for the setup. Wouldn't ever go back. Plenty of low range for the terrain I see. If I was to do anything else it would be a nv4500 swap in order to have an overdrive.

I run a sm465 in my 1985 jimmy and I love it's always more fun with stick, you decide when and where you want the power to go.

i just picked up a 10 spline 465-205 to replace my 400-205 and am excited... for those of you who have driven both combos, how much deeper does 1st-Low feel? trying to decide if i want to find a 10 spline 203 and use my short input 32spline 205 in a doubler combo instead...

The 465 feels way deeper than the 400 in high range. 1st gear in double-low is just insanity. You won't regret it one bit. :D
