who wheels diesel?

Ok guys, how odifferious is that thing with the top off? I would want to stink myself out on a slow trail, or the guy behind me for that matter.

I doubt I'll ever do one unless I score another M1009, but you never know what will follow me home.

rene, so would it be better or worse than ur setup with 6.2, 700r4, 5.13s, 42s?

i really want a diesel, i prolly get around 9 now

Your cruise rpm's would be about 1850 rpm with that combo...which is ideal for fuel economy. However the extra frontal area of a lifted truck will hurt some, as will the brutal rolling resistance of bias ply swampers. I'd expect 18-19 mpg though...might see 20 but I doubt it.

I run about 4-5 months of the year without my top and I never smell the diesel smoke. I do run a full exhaust system though. I have heard a few guys mention the exhaust 'odor' on the trail but got the impression it was just a bit of ribbing rather than a real compaint. To be honest I don't like the smell of any type of exhaust...so to me it's pretty much a moot point.

Prolly similar to what I get...around 14-15. Your overdrive makes those 5.13's cool for the highway, and around town the 5.13's aren't going to hurt you any.

I have exhaust turndowns on my truck that dump right after the cab. I dont have a bed or sliding window in the back and I never smell my exhaust on the trail. My club always makes me ride at the back of the pack though, cause they dont like the smoke :D

I run 39.5" TSL's, no overdrive, 4.56's and it'll get 16.5 mpg running down the highway all day long. With the 355 i pulled out the best I ever managed with the same tires and gearing was 9 mpg.

Rene,
'No overdrive' - does that mean you have a TH400 or you just don't use the OD on the 700r4? Which t/c (so I know your low range). How do you find the combo offroad? Do any mud?

My 6.2 powered Blazer has been on the trails for years. I bought the '90 model in '94 and it has been a dedicated trailrig since about '98.

In most situations the 6.2 is great on the trail. The low end torque and fuel-injection type performance are great for low speed technical stuff. There are a few occassions every once in awhile where more total power would be nice to get more wheel speed for really slick spots and hillclimbs.

Mine really does not smoke at all, maybe just a hair when under heavy throttle. I have not had the top on it for a couple of years and the exhaust has turndowns that go right after the rear axle. You sometimes get a wiff of diesel exhaust but generally it's not that noticable.

On the road I really don't like driving the 6.2 in it's current form......38" tires and 4.10 gears don't help in the "get up and go" department especially considering my daily driver has 300 hp, 4.10 gears, and 32" tall tires.

I do not have any real desire to change the engine, might do some tweaking to it this summer for a bit more power but nothing substantial. When it's time to be replaced I honestly don't know what I will do. A nice 300 hp small block gasser sounds interesting, but I would definitely want fuel injection...and replacing it with a 6.2 would probably be easier than trying to get a gasser FI setup running right.

Ive also been thinking of swapping a diesel in my truck. My only real concern is that I dont want to have much if any power loss. My truck is my daily driver with a 300-350 hp 350 on 37's with 4.10 gears and an sm465. My mileage is about 8-10 mpg which is why im looking at changing to diesel. I plan to add some sort of overdrive in the future then put a diesel in so I can take my truck on longer trips without killing my wallet. I just want to know if I will notice a power loss if I swap my 350 out for a turbo'd 6.2? And also how hard the swap would be?

i think you'll notice a difference in the horsepower department. it will be a different kind of get up and go w/ the turbo diesel. it shouldn't be too bad of a swap - you just need to know that you'll have to re work your brakes (runs off power steering), and get a glow plug set up in the cab (manual switch). it is usually recommended to get a donor rig so that you know you have all the parts accessible. ;) good luck

SM465 NP205 currently. Soon to be a NV4500/203/205 :D

I love it offroad, although I don't do much mud. The mud I have done has been no problem getting the 40's spinning fast enough to 'self clean'...

I think that may have just sold me on it :D

'J' code intake, turn up the fuel some, large free flowing exhaust, good cold air intake, port match the intake...all help. Turbo is the biggest power producer though.

Rene

No solid plans for a turbo, definitely plan for bigger exhaust and possibly turning up the fuel a little. I'm already happy with the power, but I've never felt the need to drag race my K5 and I don't tow with it.

what's your elevation?

Current elevation is 300'...:D

For what it's worth i didn't mind it cruising around Moab either, and the elevation there was 4000+ feet.
