why all the jeep hate?

I dislike jeeps for the most part. if I were to come across an ancient one for a good price, I;d deffinately get it. other then that, most new jeep owners anymore don;t take thier cars off road ( yes, i call them cars) and whats with coming furnished to the roof in leather? I never liked my parents jeep. it was a 91 YJ wrangler, and sucked to high hell. the brakes were worse then useless on it, none of the gauges worked right, except for, thankfully the water temp, and occasionaly the oil pressure gauge. if you didn't remember to reset the trip odometer at the gas station, and lost count of how far you went, you would be walking ( as I have done several times,) when the stupid thing would run out of gas at anywhere from 1/8th to 1/2 a tank. parts for it were expensive, 1/2 japanese metric, 1/2 american standard/ 1/2 mexican metric, and 1/2 canadian metric.... ( they differ slighlty in that about 1/2 the bolts fit neither american, nor metric)

the main problem I have with the stupid things, are the drivers, including my sister.... she speeds, whips through traffic liek shes at NASCAR, holds hte belief that she owns the road, has 30,000 trinkets hanging from every available toggle, lever, switch, mirror, and hook blocking view in nearly every direction, and fits the cliche of 90% of all women jeep drivers. men, or boy as application may need to be adjusted, drivers are little better in those things, generaly spending more time talking about how cool thier jeep is, then actually offroading it. there are exceptions, such as my kid brother, who jacked his jeep XJ (2 door cherokee from 92) up, threw 31's under it, and proceeded to romp, and drive the hell out of it. he jumped that hting with me in the front seat, which was kinda unsettling to say the least. he had to get rid of it, due to getting 3 accidents, and 2 tickets in a 3 month period, and his insurance rates going from 160 a month to 495 a month....

sorr for all you people who like cute lil jeeps, but I deeply dislike them. to whoever said a stock heep could outgo a stock Blazer, chew on this: my father and I high centered on a roadside berm, while executing a U turn, and had to be wenched out. the berm was approx 7 inches tall, compsoed of soft dirt, with a hardpack core in it, and was more then enough to bring 2 corner wheels up off the ground, and make the rear locker useless. ( the locker was the only mod at that point... it was back on stock sized tires) I;ve done far tougher crap in my C20 pickup, with a bad clutch, and broken engine mounts then that, and only had it stuck once ( middle of a gravel bar, in a dry wash in AZ, and only cause some chode in a heep cut me off, forcing me to lose momentum, and sink into the pea sized gravel to the rear axle housing)

besides, everyone moves out of my way on the freeway for either of my burbs, no one moves for a jeep

Guys here hate Jeeps because it seems that there's a rivalry between who has the best rock crawler. I really couldn't care less who wins, because I wouldn't put MY truck through that to find out.

I don't have any particular dislike for Jeeps, but I wonder why so many people like them. In stock form, no jeep has any decent parts. We whine about 10 bolts? What if you had a Dana 30? Would you really whine then? We bash 305s because they don't have enough power? What if you had an 80 horse 4 banger? We need CV driveshafts? Imagine if your vehicle was 5 feet shorter!!

As you can see, there's not a single part of a Jeep that's really any good for off-roading from the factory.

So, I've devised a plan to build a good Jeep:

First, rip every single nut and bolt out of it, except leave the body in one piece.

Fabricate a complete frame made from steel that can withstand punishing and weld it up well. Either that, or box the current frame completely. Lower the engine so the driveline angles aren't insane. Also, build in a 6" body lift so it can clear 31s before you get the suspension done.

Add a Chevy small block of some kind, your choice, even a 305 will do here. Add whatever kind of tranny floats your boat, 700R4, SM 465, TH 350, NV 4500, you know, whatever will bolt to a Chevy V8. Bolt a NP 205 on the back of that.

Get the most expensive driveshafts you can and bring spares. Add a large suspension lift and cut the fenders and MAYBE, just MAYBE, you can get 35s on the thing. Put a D60 up front with an ARB and a 14 bolt out back with a detroit locker.

Now slap the tub on top. What was that thing again? It says Jeep on the side, but it appars the whole driveline is not Jeep at all.

So, while I don't really hate Jeeps, I recognize their uselessness in stock form.

I think most people on this board don't have any real hate towards other brands, just friendly rivalry. I own Chevy, Jeep and Ford right now, they all have their good points.

sorry, I do have a true hatred of phord... I refuse to ride in them, even if it means walking, or taking a bus....

Yeah really! What's with brand loyalty anyway? Makes no sense to me at all. All of them operate on the same principle. None are superior to the other one. In fact, if you ask me, the only company that still makes real trucks is FORD. They're the only ones that still make a truck with leaf springs and real, straight axles front and rear. I might even consider getting rid of my K10 for a new Ford. But I guess to each his own. I will never sell this K10, but one day I'll have a new Superduty as well.

Even if that Ford could run thru the dez pushing you're innards against your spine?

I have owned a 79 F150 with a 6" lift, 35s and a 460, an 83 CJ7 with a 258, 4" lift and 35s, and now my K5. I dont dislike any vehicle because by the time I'm done, all thats left is the the frame and some of the body

!!!!! I have found, however, that the interchangability of chevy trucks makes building them up cheaper. One of the reasons I sold my jeep was I couldnt afford to swap out the amc 20 and dana 30 axles ( I had the K5 at the same time) and that F150 was a ton of fun with that 460

!!! Who cares what you start with, because after all... it's what you build not what you buy, right? The one thing I dont like about this site is the closed-mindedness. Not that many people build K5s for hardcore use, and we can learn a lot from the toyota and jeep guys.

Hey Ray,
Ever do any time at Paragon? Man, there are some kick-a$$ Blazers there! Occasional Burb too! Prolly wouldn't reconize me cause I prefer Jeep on the trail. Getting the Jeep to the trails is another thing though ;)

So a Dodge is not a real truck huh? How could you refuse a Dana80/Dana60 combo along with a 24V cummins, and a really good looking body? I mean Hello! I love them, I don't see why ya'll hate dodge's soo much! And no, there trannies do not suck! I am around one daily that has 70,000+ miles on it without so much as a hiccup!

I don't dislike the J:(p as much as I dislike a large percentage of the owners. They seem to feel like their sh-t doesn't stink and that their "rigs" are unbreakable and believe me they are. I am actually part of a jeep club here in so cal simply because I could not find any other club that was not just out to get drunk and break stuff. There are some cool j:(p owners around it's just the "it's a j:(p thing you wouldn't understand" sticker flaunting crowd that makes the "j:(p it's what's for dinner" crowd cringe. Hell my wife had one when I first met her, but the novelty of the removable top wore off when winter arrived each year and we wanted to go snowboarding and not have to have friends carry our boards for us....not to mention the fact that we froze our asses off. It's just a preference kind of thing kind of like having to push a phord around, if you don't mind it then more power to you I just don't like to myself.

J:(P it's what's for dinner!

Ron, I've never done Paragon. I was suposed to go for the OHV Extravaganza on Memorial Day weekend, but I had to work. I do plan on getting out there sometime this year though.

maybe you should get your sister to teach you how to drive if you got your jeep stuck on a 7in high berm. locker w/ stock tires? goooood idea!!!

RE:
"im callin your bluff thunder -----"my freind bought a new wrangler and had to do a 3" lift and lockers just to keep up with my nearly stock k5" B.S.!!!!"

This is no BS. We were out hunting a few years back and My buddy was suprised that his jeep wrangler couldn't climb as good as my K5. He had a lift with 33" BFG. I was running 31" Wranglers. He had a far harder time climbing rough tore up rutted hills than I do. It was shortly after that he put the lockers in it climbs much better now.
Also Another friend and his son both went and bought new Wranglers last year. After driving it only a year He is already talking about trading his in. And his son came back from wheeling in the hills last weekend and was complaining that his new Jeep was overheating.
My neighbor has a jeep wrangler and he wants to get rid of it and get a Toyota or Nissan PU. He said to me" You like to work on 4x4s, Why dont you buy my jeep?
Nuf said.

GOT HORSEPOWER?

I only hate the Jeeps owned by yuppie little pricks who think they have a better 4x4 than me ! They don't even know how to lock it in to 4 wheel drive ! I like the ones that are built right..........you know the ones with Chevy axles, engines and trannies !!!!

I'll agree w/ all the points made about stock jeeps w/ weak axles being overrated and think'n their crap don't stink... but there is also the rivalary going cause it seems like a lot of Jeeps get Chevy 350 motors and trannys, etc. Overall I like Jeeps, but they definetly have their problems... but then so do Blazers and gm's. It's all how you look at stuff IMO.
