why does my 383 suck? >> now a crack??

I have 30 degrees at idle in my 454 in my K30, about 22 in my 383 and 38 in my camaros 427. If it is all in by 3000 anyway it should be at least 24 by the rpm he is towing at. Everything idles better with high advance. You should look at new efi stuff on a scanner.

I may be wrong but the way I set it up is 8* initial and 32-36 total @3000 rpm without vacuum line hooked up.
I'd always tried for about 10* initial, or told to anyway but it ran like crap so I just timed it by ear and lived with it.

Obviously I had horribly screwed up mechanical advance so now that it's fixed things are better, but I'm still at 24* initial. How would I get that down and still get to 34 by 3k? Lighter springs I guess? Is that something I should try for? :dunno:

vac advance is ghey... :haha:

thank god boats don't run that crap...

your not gonna blow a mill up at 1200 rpm's, but you sure will with bad timing at 4000.... :woot:  :doah: :haha:

I should notate here that I was kidding for the most part on vac adv... tho a mechanical dizzy can be successfully run on the street, the benefits of vac advance on a street driven car outweigh the ghey factor generally.. :haha:

it was more just a statement/reminder about it not being necessary from a crusty old-timer.... ;)

One more thing the plug looked pretty white to me. I think its running a little lean. that can also cause pinging

it "should" be what he set it at 3k rpm with vacuum advance disconnected. the vacumm advance helps get you better fuel milage at cruising rpms and as you get under a heavy load the vacuum goes away and the timing retards so you dont get detonation. unless you have some really heavy springs on the mechanical advance all mechanical timing should be "in" at or before 3k rpms.

It should be, but without checking there is no way to know if it is all done advancing.

yeah, I think the next step here is to get the carb adjusted right. Never done that before either.
I'll need some help walking through that as well.

How old are the plugs? They may take a bit to show color. Idk if I have said this yet but FIND A CHASSIS DYNO. A wide band and a dyno make that job much easier.

Yes that's the best way but that gets expensive.

The only thing I have adjusted on the is the mixture screws on the front. Just adjust to get highest idle. The adjust idle setting as needed. You may need to buy metering rods also... That's out of my knowledge though

If you are buying parts to adjust a edelbrock it will get expensive quick. I would prefer a Qjet or a Truck Avenger Holley. My place charges 50 an hour. If you get your poop together 2 hours can make a big difference. My guy just guides me and I do the work. 20hp is pretty easy to find. Drivability is usually huge. Even if it was 200 what are you going to buy to gain 20 hp and make it drive nicer?

Absolutely correct. Especially with how many things are adjustable on the edelbrock. They can be finicky B!¥<=#*
But once you've learned their black
Magic of which metering rid goes with what jet, dial in your idle air screws for your engine, pick the right accel pump hole to actuate from and they are awesome,( til you hit the hills)

The plugs are plenty old. At least a year.

I'll look into finding a dyno and see what they charge.

I'll try that and also see if I can find a beginners guide online somewhere or something.
