Windstar electric fans

No Matter which way I hook up the switch both fans come on. I even disconnected both 85's from the primary fan connecting to the switch, leaving only the single 85 to the secondary fan, and it powers both fans too.

What type of diodes should be on 87 to the fan? I didn't see them on your parts list. It looks like it is in line with 10 ga wire.

Windstar fan install 006.jpg I made a cardboard template.

Windstar fan install 007.jpg Overlayed the template on the OG fan shroud.

Windstar fan install 011.jpg I cut out the circle and bolted the 2 parts together.

Now I am working on the wiring.

Thanks,

I need a diode . I went out looking for one and came up empty handed.

What is this diode part number?

I used diodes on my brake lights for flat towing, they were little black boxes with 3 flat connectors, 2 on one side & one on the other. Is that what I need?
Can I just take those off & use them?

This is the diode you need any radio shack will have it in stock so crimp it in place with but connecters and heat shrink the hole thing.

also is your switch a 3 postion 4 pole? if it's only a three pole you can't wire up a warning light at least not to my knowledge.

I bought the wrong one today: http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2049725

My switch is a DPDT 3 position ON-OFF-ON.

My buddy had a fan wired with an OFF indicator light back in the day, I'll ask him what he did.

Thanks Again.:waytogo:

Yeah - You don't want a zener diode, it will let voltage pass when a certain amount of voltage is reached.

I was trying to find my diode setup but haven't had any luck, much less remember where I found it to begin with. It is a blade type, which is in a fuse holder. If it ever pops, I can replace it like an inline fuse. I'll find it and post up.

Thanks for jumping in, supermotard750.

Posting up all these pictures (that I can't see right now) has me considering re-subscribing just for a peak. :dunno: I'll put it like I did this time last year, "Some things aren't meant to be understood I guess." and I'll leave it at that.

As I mentioned earlier, pblaze725, the indicator I understand you want is for the fan motor failing correct ? You can put an indicator anywhere in the circuit but it wont tell you that revelation. You will most likely (in the easiest method, anyway) need to run a separate circuit from the fan motor with a change-over relay for each motor.

The relay, having two closed contacts will either complete the circuit for the fan or it will complete the circuit for the indicator. Use the ground side of the motor for switching so that if the fan is powered ON, but doesn't come on, the change-over relay wont switch - Turning your indicator light ON instead.

This is a completely separate task so try not to think into the Windstar installation for reference. The fans serve one purpose - Cooling. The indicator serves one purpose - Telling you the fans are ON or OFF. Two separate systems.

See how your buddy did it and let us know if his way work(s/ed) and how he did it - I'm curious about it at this point.

what do you need a diode for?

It turns out that I don't need one.

I called Supermotard750 & he came over last night & checked it out. Thanks buddy.

It turns out the fans' (2) red wires were connected inside the harness.:doah:
I separated them & now everything works properly. :waytogo:

The indicator light is just a reminder that I have the switch in the [off] position not that the fan has malfunctioned.

I'll let you know if/when I figure it out.

Thanks for all the help.
... Stay Cool.

For the indicator light all you have to do is hook up a relay behind the dash that has ignition power then to the switch for the primary fan an hook the light up for 87a. 87a is connected untill you switch it then it turns off

Awesome!
I have everything put back together and it works like a dream.
I haven't hooked up a light yet, but I will.
I want to relocate some other switches too, but I'm tired of wiring for now.
